  • How to understand GEDMatch results with similar Mediterranean backgrounds

I know that my father is from Italy. My grandfather is Sicilian and my grandmother's parents were from Naples and Umrbia (central Italy). On my mother's side my grandmother was a Polish Jew and my grandfather was Portuguese and Irish but converted to Judaism...I was told his last name may have been Sephardi Jewish but people converted to Christianity during the inquisition, but I was never sure about this. Anyway, I took the ancestry.com test and it came back that my roots were 2% North African, 31% Italy.Greece, 27% European Jewish, 16% Iberian, 11% West European and 9% West Asian (Middle East). This made sense to me given my family is mostly Mediterranean, however, I wanted to break it down further, so I uploaded my results to gedmatch. I am very confused because I get very different results depending on which test I do and I am also confused by how they label some of the regions. For instance, I am told Caucasus is common to Middle Eastern backgrounds? I'm just very confused. Also, when I did the Dodecad K12b test, I see a lot of "Shepardi" label in the oracle mixed mode population results...But I'm not sure if this is because it is picking up the Iberian and Italian roots mixed with the Ashkenazi Jewish ones? I have heard it can be hard for them to decipher between Jewish and Italian roots as both have both Middle Eastern and European genes...I also know Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews roots are similar as well, so how do I tell if these results are correct? My grandmother was a Cohen and I have been told that might mean Sephardi roots...But I know many Ashkenazi with this name...I am going to post the results here and if anyone knows how to decipher them, please let me know, any help would be so appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!
