Another newbie with questions

Definitely test the oldest living generation you have available for Family Finder. I've done both my grandmothers (age 89 and 90). I also tested a first cousin to one of my grandmothers - on paper she's the same generation as my grandmother but she's the same age as my parents. She descends from my great-great-grandmother's 2nd marriage. Unfortunately both my grandfathers died years ago (1988 and 1996) so no way to test them now. They would have been very interested in this new tool.

The older the person who takes the test the further back you can get match wise. I'm going through the matches of the three testers whose results have come in so far and one has a potential matching surname but that name goes back to about 1700-1720 in Austria. Sometimes you have to go that far back to find a match but that's the benefit of testing the oldest living generation - you're more likely to find that link through them than a tester in a younger generation.

Once my results come in and my parents test (mom's test is in the mail) it will be interesting to see if any of us share matches with my grandmothers.

I am definitely more convinced now to get them tested! My mom kept making me second guess on asking or wait til mine comes back but why not just get the test and get them tested since it can go back farther for them than for me. Talked to my grandma and she thought it was a good idea! So glad I asked everyone on here because she says she is and isn't interested on stuff but once you start asking she is interested. I ordered one for her and my grandpa and can't to get all the results back after sending them in!

The great thing about getting the samples now is that you can always run other tests in the future as long as the sample doesn't degrade and there is enough remaining to test with. I just have to convince some of my grandmothers' siblings to test too.

How lucky you all are to have grandparents and their siblings to test. I have only just managed to test the last surviving sibling from my parents who have been gone for many years.

Another question for FTDNA workers, sorry!

So I just received the two DNA kits for my grandparents, and a paper in there that mine didn't have. I am sure it is because I had them sent here and because my last name has already ordered, but it says the paper needs to be filled out but at the bottom also asks about payment. Does that need to be filled out? Should I fill it out and put paid? Since I paid for theirs on my card? Just don't want to get charged again!

My Mum and Dad's kits were paid for, but had the paper slip in with the kit.

I filled in the details but re the payment part I wrote "Already Paid" across this.

No problems, Mum test results came in last week and Dad's are due anytime now.

Ahh thank you! I will definitely do the same then! Just found it odd that mine didn't have that but both theirs did and knowing I had already paid for both!
