  • Cousin estimate & level on tree?

    If I have a match estimated 3rd cousin what Level on the gedcom (tree) should I be looking for - approximately?
    What about 4th cousin?

    3rd cousins share great-great-grandparents.

    We have a cousinship chart in the Learning Center:

        Glad to help!

        Also, here's a neat trick... count the G's in the relationship of the common ancestor

        Grandparents = 1 G = 1st cousins
        Great-Grandparents = 2 G's = 2nd cousins
        Great-Great-Grandparents = 3 G's = 3rd cousins
        etc

        This only works with an equal number of generations to the common ancestor -- doesn't work when there's a different number of generations and the relationships are once removed, twice removed, etc.

          If there are a different number of generations then the shortest route gives the cousin number and the difference gives the removed level.

            Lyn: Yep, that's a great way to figure out those out!
