Hi

Ive read the information about these results but am still a little perplexed by the South Asian percentage. Can anyone explain in laymens terms does this mean anything for recent ancestry or does this show ancestry in tens of thousands of years.

Europe (Western European) Orcadian 94.98% ±0.84%
South Asia Southeast Indian, North Indian 5.02% ±0.84%

My uncle who had this test done was 100%

Europe Finnish, French, Russian, Tuscan

According to the FAQ http://www.familytreedna.com/faq/ans...spx?id=22#1213 it is highly likely that the source is from Roma and Sinti peoples. Lucky you! And I say that because you did not get the ambiguous Middle Eastern results. Though it is perplexing now, you may be able to make a connection at some point. Especially if you have ancestry from Great Britian, and one of those ancestors might have worked for the East India Company.

Or perhaps from the Roma peoples that came to Europe. Your Uncles's results will differ from yours because he does not inherit DNA the exact same as anyone else in your family. You might have inherited the South Asian from the side of the family that your Uncle is NOT related to you on as well.

Population Finder is going to be updated soon. A few of us were trying to get Rebekah to at least give us a "guesstimate" of its release. So far she is being very tight lipped!

Hi All

Thank you for the responses. A friend who used 23 and me posted a picture of their genetic breakup. I wonder if ours will look the same.

Now to try and find that ancestral clue!

I have an ancestor who worked for the East India company on the other side of my family but he never had children with the locals.

Please be aware that this is an estimated timeframe.

Bennett said this during CeCe Moore's panel discussion / Q&A with each of the companies. And he actually said "don't quote me on this" when he estimated 6 to 8 weeks. So, naturally, he was quoted on it

Of course, we all hope the 6-8 week estimate will be on-target!

Going off Beta testing may surprise people

I seem to be one person who was pleased with the results of my Population Finder. I'm a western European mutt 97.82 % Western European tested against Basque, French, Orkadian, and Spanish. My brother tested and he was 91.55 % Europe (Western tested against French/Spanish, and 8.45% Europe tested against Finnish, Orcadian, and Russian. No surprises, because a back as far as I can trace my ancestors were from Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, Flanders, Netherlands, Walloonia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, German, Palatine, Switzerland, But for someone to take my DNA and decide what my ethnic background is other than in the broadest of terms is going to be a joke. Nations didn't even exist when some of my ancestor were getting it together and mixing it up.
So many people over on Ancestry.com have complained about the recent atDna testing in the area of ethnicity that it isn't funny. It hasn't been well explained that the Family Finder for cousins match, tests different material than the Population finder looks at.

Anything is an improvement from what they have now. Of course not everyone will be happy, sure some might be displeased. Really though the results that you have now are also political constructs too. We are all humans, and actually quite similar to each other is what we should remember. :-) But we like these tests to try and learn more about our personal family histories.

Yes I'm not sure if the new PF will be able to tell you if you have ancestry from Flanders or Walloonia. I do think it should be able to reasonably say if someone is British or Irish. That's just my guess! Another company has issues with breaking up German, and Dutch. And that company doesn't even offer Dutch as a category. And they lump the French and German together, which only partly makes sense. I have also been told that to read German as a category they would have to actually break them into a few different categories of them such as an East/ West/North/South kind of thing. If I remember correctly what Davidski told me once. Though calculators on Gedmatch are able to tease these ancestries out really good for people. Which is weird in a sense speaking of political borders, because people will say Gedmatch calculators are for older admixtures. Oh well. I welcome the change, whatever it is. I don't like my results as you can see them in my signature. The reason I don't like them is because I can literally read into them 3 different ways. I'm a simple person, and I like to keep it as simple as possible.
