    is there a possibility that two exact matching y-str people say at the 12 level, be completley unrelated?

    More then possible, even very likely 12/12 marker matches are not related if the 2 men are not of the same surname.

      thanks for your reply.

      but what i mean is that could it be possible that that match and i are completley unrelated even before 50-60 generations. what i mean is could two lineages evolve into the same y str seperatley?

        Perhaps, if the mens' ancestors' differing 12 y-str values mutated over the generations until the 12 y-str values looked alike? Don't know how likely that is.

          Hi,

          Not completely, as they still likely share the same haplogroup (genetic branch). It could be pretty far back though.
