  • Formula for calculating Neanderthal Percentage?

Does anyone know the formula for calculating an individual's Neanderthal percentage?

I tried to run my raw data through Interpretome and it didn't take the FTDNA file. So I ran it through Promethease and out of the 42 SNPs I got 22 (see below), that seems like more than the average of 7 to 10 SNPs for Europeans, but it doesn't give me the %. So given my result, how do I calculate the estimated percentage of Neanderthal DNA I have?

    Take the 23&Me test...only $99 Ha

Hah, that's what I'm trying to avoid! Seems like a shame to pay 99 bucks when I can tease of the info from the raw data.

You must take Neanderthal ancestry with a grain of salt--maybe a teaspoon of salt. I have too assessments of my Neanderthal ancestry. 23andMe has me at 2%. Geno 2.0 has me at 2.8%--40% higher than the 23andMe result.

If someone has a formula, then the result has three possibilities: 1) it agrees with 23andMe; 2) it agrees with Geno 2.0; 3) it agrees with neither. In either case, you have a disagreement with at least commercial assessment. How do you arbitrate the disagreement?

It gets even more complicated when you consider most Europeans also are part Denisovan besides Neanderthal. National geographic reports that currently there is no good way to measure this ( I'm paraphrasing ) but clearly that is their meaning. I was 3.1 % neanderthal at 23andme but this was reduced by the Geno2 test to 2.6% Neanderthal and 2.7. % Denisovan.
So these reports are questionable and was said earlier not to be taken seriously.

No offense, but what if it said you were 30% Neanderthal? Would it change anything?

I would definitely take any and all of those tests with a grain of salt. I seriously doubt modern homo sapien sapiens had much if any breeding with Homo neanderthalensis. Why would they?

They were often separated by geographically and by time in certain instances and although there may have been some contact it was probably hostile.

Most humans or humanoids are frightened or attack the unknown or things that are different.

Sorry.. I know its a bit off topic. I just doubt the amount of neanderthal in any of us. Although I have dated a few

30% Neanderthal would be awesome! Clearly this is just for fun and curiosity. I just find it fascinating that modern humans interbred with archaic humans and that I am a product of that. Even if the numbers are off a bit, I think its still cool.

If you had 30% I don't think you would have the mental capacity to operate your computer.

And you would probably be in a cage labeled as a "squatch".

That is a misunderstanding of what and who the Neanderthals were. They were not stupid. To the contrary, it is my understanding that they had about the same brain capacity as us. Physically, they were stronger. As I understand them, their major weakness compared to us was in communication. Neanderthals were severely limited in their ability to share information with neighboring groups and to pass information on to the next generation. Having said that, Neanderthals survived for 250,000 years. We may outlive them, but we have a long way to go before we do it.

                        Neanderthal???

Most tend to think of Us as being the contemporary Us and not the early man being compared to Neanderthal. I am sure We did not look or smell any better in the early days...and in certain situations no doubt intermingled ! As for the testing for it, I am sure it needs improvement. I tested 2.6% at 23 and 3.5% with Geno. My Denisovan was 3.0% at Geno. Gee, I don't look too much different!!

                          It was a joke.

I have an advanced degree in Archaeology. I am fully aware of who the modern Homo sapiens are/were and who homo neanderthalensis were and what their brain capacity was. However, it is impossible to know precisely what or how their brain lacked in relation to modern humans without a time machine or actual brain matter. Yes we have skull and cranial remains and can reconstruct their cranial capacity but neuroscientists today with an actual live person sitting in an MRI scanner cannot fully deconstruct the human mind and its mysteries. One thing we do know is that they looked different with an occipital bun and a large over hanging brow and a muscular build.

Homo erectus lived from approximately 2.8 million years-290,000 years ago. Does that make them somehow stronger/better?

I still say with 30 % you would be in a cage caught by one of those "squatch"hunters on the Discovery channel.

Then you would be on the reality surgical makeover show. Good luck with the waxing!
