  • # of people in each Y Haplogroup

So I was bored and had some time so I decided to play around and see if I could come up with some numbers on how many men in the world are in each lettered haplogroup. This is all back of the envelope kind of stuff but they should all at least be in the ballpark. Anyway I found it interesting and thought you all might too. I was surprised that P wasn't the smallest.

Hmmm... I always thought R was the largest but I guess I was wrong.

If you're talking about haplogroups found mostly among men with European ancestry, then, yes, R would be the largest. (R would also take in a significant part of the Indian/Pakistani men, through R1a and R2.) What Osiris realized, probably correctly, is that the area of the world with the largest population is China and East Asia in general. O is the most common haplogroup in that part of the world.

I'm not sure if E or J would have more men. I'm thinking that a significant part of the Indian population would add to Iran, Turkey, Arab populations and southern Europeans and put J ahead of E. But it may be that African men in E, added to Arab and southern European men in E, would put E ahead of J.

I actually have India as the largest source of J but the E heat map of Africa has so many places over 90% it gets surpassed easily.

        But it's all for fun.
