And a very large percentage of my matches who do respond know nothing past their grandparents (but that is also the case on Ancestry, it's just that with the far larger number of matches, it's less annoying).

With over 2000 matches at Ancestry (only 127 here), I can begin to see patterns. The bad thing is they have no search tools. Or any other tools for that matter.

The best thing to do at 23andMe is Invite every match and use Family Inheritance Advanced in conjunction with the 529AndYou Chrome extension to easily create a good personal chromosome segment match database.... It would be great if 529 can be ported to FTDNA and Gedmatch chromosome browsers!

Since I already had a family tree on Ancestry, I feel that is one of my "home places" in all of this. And for me, their estimate of my genetic ancestry was pretty close to what I have been told. I like how Ancestry groups matches by ethnicity right away. That gives me a sense as to which of my grandparents the matches are probably connected to, even ever so distantly.

The lowered price on 23 and Me finally hooked me. I was very satisfied with the health related reports. (I have taken a test for one condition elsewhere and family members have already spoken to a genetics counselor, so I have very high regard for the medical aspect of that company's reports on clients.) More ethnicities in my known ancestry were found too. Native American ancestry did come up in my ancestry report, a first for me when comparing the three DNA companies. After thinking it over, I had my elderly father take a test with 23 and Me and not Ancestry (he had already taken one here).

Communication on 23 and Me? I have yet to receive one personal answer to two emails about problems I encountered (both problems were eventually figured out anyway). I have had communication with matches but it seems to me most I communicate with so far have some connection to FTDNA initially, like me. I've only contributed to one forum on 23 and Me but was impressed by the posts of others so far.

The Neanderthal percentage report from 23 and Me was fun, I must admit.

I question your advice to someone who knows nothing about one half of his ancestry. If one does not have a pretty good existing family tree, then the tree based DNA matching of AncestryDNA (the ONLY function AncestryDNA currently provides) is nearly worthless!
I think the OP was wanting to read what others think and I gave my 2 cent like you. A first, second, or even third cousin on the missing side of the tree might have a account at Ancestry and has tested. Its just common since at work here. You get a clue you look at public trees to see what you can fine Ancestry all the way.

I apologize if my post offended you. That was not my intent.

Looking back at it now, I see I should have chosen my words more carefully

Good for you for apologizing. I won't hold my breath waiting for EdwardRHill to apologize for his totally uncalled for language. I think he's lost it!

First off Bert you have nothing to say sorry for but I was wondering why you were using exclamation mark. MMaddi you are one of those I was taking about.
