  • Geno 2.0, 23&Me, and Doug McDoanld Help?

    I sent my results (both 23&Me and Geno) + my mother's Geno results to Doug and was wondering if someone could help me figure out, most likely, what side my of my parents my 'Jewish' results are coming from? I am still waiting for my mom's 23&Me results.

    Doug said that the Geno data is very noisy and that the 23 data is much better for his analysis - but I thought we might be able to disern something regarding this ancestry? I am wondering why, on the Geno reults, I show middle eastern and Jewish but not my mother yet my X (which is obviously from her) shows middle eastern. Doug said not to pay attention to the X.??? So I am trying to see where I should start looking? Seemingly my father's side which would be even less likely Iw ould think from what I know obout the records.

    Here are the McDonald reults for both our Geno and my 23 results by Doug:

    My Geno:

    This analysis uses only 57785 markers and is quite noisy.

    Most likely fit is 82.9% (+- 1.1%) Europe (all Western Europe) and 17.1% (+- 1.1%) Mideast (various subcontinents).

    The following are possible population sets and their fractions, most likely at the top.

    English= 0.816 Georgian= 0.184 or
    English= 0.827 Armenian= 0.173 or
    English= 0.844 Iranian= 0.156

    This looks 16% Jewish plus English, Irish or German

    He definately got the English, Irish, and German. But like I said the Jewish is new one for me.

    Chromosome Painting - see below attachments:

    Mom's Geno:

    This analysis uses only 57785 markers and is quite noisy.

    Most likely fit is 47.0% (+- 0.0%) Europe (all Western Europe) and 53.0% (+- 0.0%) Europe (all Northeast Europe) which is 100% total Europe.

    The following are possible population sets and their fractions, most likely at the top.

    French= 0.470 Belorus= 0.530

    This looks German, plus a faintly possible 1% American.

    Geno2 is so noisy and I have less experience with it, so I am very unsure whether this American is real.

    Chromosome Painting - see below attachments:

    My 23&Me:

    Most likely fit is 53.9% (+- 7.3%) Europe (all Western Europe) and 26.1% (+- 4.4%) Europe (all Northeast Europe) which is 80.0% total Europe and 18.8% (+- 4.0%) Mideast (various subcontinents) and 1.3% (+- 0.8%) S. Asia (various subcontinents)

    The following are possible population sets and their fractions, most likely at the top

    English= 0.466 Lithuani= 0.284 Jewish= 0.226 Sindhi= 0.023 or
    English= 0.470 Lithuani= 0.279 Jewish= 0.224 Pathan= 0.027 or
    English= 0.448 Lithuani= 0.297 Jewish= 0.239 N_India= 0.016 or
    English= 0.443 Lithuani= 0.302 Jewish= 0.243 S_India= 0.012 or
    English= 0.608 Lithuani= 0.221 Armenian= 0.164 N_India= 0.007 or
    English= 0.606 Lithuani= 0.222 Armenian= 0.165 S_India= 0.006 or
    English= 0.612 Lithuani= 0.218 Armenian= 0.163 Sindhi= 0.007 or
    English= 0.612 Lithuani= 0.217 Armenian= 0.163 Pathan= 0.008 or
    English= 0.607 Lithuani= 0.223 Armenian= 0.170 Hazara= 0.000 or
    French= 0.516 Lithuani= 0.347 Armenian= 0.117 N_India= 0.020

    There is no need to do Geno2 ... 23andme is much better.

    This is probably in fact ¾ German and the rest Jewish. But there could in fact be other northern or western European in there plus the Jewish.

    That 1/4 Jewish of the German result was right on - 23 had me at appoximately 7%.

    My Chromosome Painting (with the X): The first two are Geno (TL mine and the UY my moms). The last one is my 23.

    Can we tell which parent it is most likely coming from - your best guess and thoughts. Thanks!

    Interesting, I was thinking of sending my Geno file to McDonald, but he himeself says it's very noisy. Did you send it in zipped file? Your Jewish part could be coming from any ancestor on any branch of your family. I wonder why he says to pay no attention to the X.

      Yeah, he asked for csv.gz (so zipped)

      I don't know why he said don't pay attention to the X? I had been emailing him a couple of times and thought I would be bugging him if I asked anymore questions.

        I just wanted to mention that the Geno 2 test is not likely to be helpful to anyone seeking recent ancestry information (the last 500 years) . It is very , very far back in time. Further back than any current world religions.
        Hence Dr McDonald's note that it was noisy .

          I sent my Geno 2.0 results to Dr. McDonald to see if he could make anything of them, and this is what he sent back:

          This analysis uses only 57785 markers and is quite noisy.
          Most likely fit is 92.0% (+- 2.3%) Europe (all Western Europe)
          and 8.0% (+- 2.3%) Mideast (various subcontinents)

          The following are possible population sets and their fractions,
          most likely at the top

          English= 0.929 Egyptian= 0.071 or
          English= 0.922 Palestin= 0.078 or
          English= 0.876 Jewish= 0.124 or
          English= 0.927 Bedouin= 0.073 or
          English= 0.943 Moroccan= 0.057

          and is very noisy indeed. Despite the above, I suspect
          either French or English with lots of other Continental European.

          I'm sure he's correct about that, as I have no known Middle Eastern heritage whatsoever (definitely no Egyptian)! Jewish is a slight possibility, but it should be so slight that it would barely show up. My known ancestry is, in general order, French, Scottish, English, German.

            @Alison:

            You know I have yet to meet another H6 let alone H6a1b person on any forum.

            You being H6a1b4 and Me being H6a1b3a. I guess we are distant cousins?

              JTR, I noticed that - when I first saw 'H' I thought, great, I'm part of the most common haplogroup in Europe, I'll have plenty of matches. Then I started looking into the particular branch, and yeah, not so much! I think I read that our branch is about 5000 years old, so sometime in the past 5000 years you and I must have had a common ancestor. Nice to meet you, cousin.

                Have you put-up a story on the Geno site? Wondering who and where was you earliest maternal ancestor from - if you know?

                  I did post my story - my most distant maternal ancestor was Christiana Dorita Mellick, born about 1735, most likely in Germany (family tradition said Germany or Holland, but I'd be very surprised if it were Holland).
