  • New Matches: How Often

How often do Ancestry DNA and 23 and Me customers get new matches? I sent in my completed 23 and Me kit yesterday.

It depends on whether you share segments with those newly tested but the databases are refreshed weekly with new results.

Ancestry matches seem to come in weekly as the database seemed to be growing very quickly. It was at the time the lowest priced test and new which had a lot to do with that. 23andme like Family Finder started to have real slow periods in between sales but 23andme probably will start to get more matches now again with their price reduction. Also with Ancestry the amount of matches will depend on how you have your settings, if you want to see even the Low Confidence matches obviously you will get many more matches than if you have the slider set higher.

Here at FTDNA, I seem to get match or two once a month, if that. Ancestry, few times a week (though my 2nd cousin 1x removed and I don't match there, oddly enough ). 23andMe has been slowing down a lot for me. Maybe once week a match or two now. Ancestry is the one with the most matches (though I don't know how many are false positives), and the most frequent new ones. went from 275 matches

            ______________
FTDNA (380 days; 1 new match every 14.07 days )

            18 Dec 2011 - 18 matches
            1 Jan 2013 - 45 matches
            ______________
            23andMe (312 days; 1 new every 2.29 days)

            24 Feb 2012 - 304 matches
            1 Jan 2013 - 440 matches
            ______________
Ancestry (156 days; 1 new every 6.82 hours)

            29 Jul 2012 - 275 matches
            1 Jan 2013 - 824 matches
            ______________

I am not sure if these were all the starting figures on the first day I had my results.

I think Ancestry gives you matches with lower confidence than Ftdna. I get pages and pages of low and very low confidence matches every week. I don't think these same matches would show up here at FTDNA using their criteria. Of course we won't know for sure until/if Ancestry gives something more than a leaf icon to indicate a common ancestor.

I agree. That said, I rec'd a match there that I can actually place in my tree (3rd cousin 2x removed). The vast majority of the matches there, I have no idea if they are even truly relatives.

Yes, I also got a 3rd cousin match there that confirmed a relationship I had on paper. BUT, that 3rd cousin match would have shown up here as well. I am talking about the gazillions of low and very low confidence matches I get at Ancestry that are useless to me.

One of my grandfather's closest matches here (predicted 3rd cousin) shows up only as a low confidence distant cousin on Ancestry, and one of his closest matches on Gedmatch doesn't show up on Ancestry at all (I have confirmed both have tested at Ancestry). So you never know.

Mlawton - I said I agreed with you. I do wish Ancestry was more transparent about OUR matches (and more user-friendly, such as searchable ).

The match I was referring to did not test here. That is why I tested at 3 places.

Sorry, Lincoln the way I worded that last post sounded contradictory and I didn't mean it to. I know we agree.

Alison, that is very interesting. I have a cousin at Ancestry that did not match to me or our other cousins in that line. Maybe she didn't inherit enough of of our line's dna (and she bears the surname), but she is testing here and I will be very interested to see if we match when her results come in.

Thank you for all of your very informative replies. I very much like the ancestry finder component of Ancestry. However, with that company so far I am not seeing the communication I find with FTDNA. The only communication I had this week through the company was with a person who has not taken the DNA test yet but we share an ancestral name. One of my British Isles matches though is definitely a distant cousin -- we share many ancestral names (including the maiden name of my maternal grandmother and even the surnames of her grandparents). And that match and I communicated many times before either of us even took the DNA test.

How often you get matches also depends on your ancestry. Our Italian cousin with all ancestors born in Italy has been on 23andMe for 3 years, and only has 85 matches. She hardly ever gets any new ones. My brother and I have 239 and 215 respectively on 23andMe. Here on FF we have each between 20 and 25. I have been on FF since the beta testing. We just don't have lots of relatives. However our 1st cousin, whose mother is Irish way back, has over 900 matches on 23andMe, mostly Irish/Isles. He gets new ones all the time.
