    Does anyone know how long it takes for a mutation to occur, on average ? For example, if you differ from another by only 1 mutation how much of a divergence, in years, would your line be from that persons line ?

    Average mutation rate per allele is usually said to be 1 in 500.

    Averages are worked out by taking into account large samples and do not help much to put a particular time on a particular instance. A single mutation could have occurred one generation ago or twenty generations ago.

      1 step mutation

      Hi,
      My dad's first cousin and my brother, our MRCA is 3 generations back, have a 1 step mutation on our 37 markers, occurring in our 3rd set of results.

      Another match of mine, our MRCA is about 9 generation back, is a perfect 25 for 25 match with us. I'm sure though, if he upgraded, it might be off also.

        Hi Kathy, Thanks for the post. It looks as though these mutations can occurr at any time. Also, I am not too familiar with the YDNA test so I am assuming when you say the third set of results you are referring to the next set of markers they would test for ? Which poses the question for me, are the tests that define your haplogroup (HVR1) more significant than the later tests ? In other words, less variable ? .. with diminishing significance the further refined you get ? .. or, are all weighted equally in terms of matching with another person. The reason I ask this is that I am off (+1-1) with 2 people, one of them I am -1 in HVR1 and +1 in HVR2, the second I am +1-1 in HVR2. Would I be more closely related to the second person who matches me exactly HVR1 or is it insignificant, and only the number of markers that are different matter (+1-1), regardless of where they are. The more I look at this stuff the more confusing it becomes ! Thanks, Laura

          in one time the 18 didnt become 18.1 or 18.5 it became 19 in the next generation not over a period of generations at least they dont put decimals on these numbers.

          maybe some one knows if they don't report forming repeats like the 18.4 but i have never heard mention of it

            Thanks Jim, what I was looking for was number of generations/years. For example my mtDNA is as follows:

            224 311 519 73 263 309.1 315.1 497 524.1 524.2 524.3 524.4

            Another persons is:

            224 311 519 73 195 263 315.1 497 524.1 524.2 524.3 524.4

            As you can see I am missing their 195 and they are missing my 309.1 so what I would like to know is how many generations it took for those paths to diverge, i.e. do we have a common ancestor 400+ years ago, 1,000+ years ago, etc.
