Further away, because X has an inheritance pattern that results is the persistence of segments across generations - as a male (XY) your X came from your mother (XX) and is a recombined product of the two X's she received, one from each of her parents, but as a male that X remained unrecombined in you (you have no other X with which it could recombine) so your X is an artifact of your maternal grandparents.
If your match is female one of her X's came from her father and is an artifact of his maternal grandparents.
If you and your match also shared other segments on other chromosomes you would be rated as closer cousins because the other chromosomes (1-22) have the standard inheritance pattern.
