  • Roadblocks for Japanese genealogy

I've done very well with most branches of my family except my Japanese great grandmother. All we know was that my great grandfather was widowed and the harbor master of the treaty port of Foochow around 1880. An associate from Japan brought his sister on a long visit and when a baby was on the way my GG did the honorable thing and married her (they went on to have 7 more kids!). But on their marriage record they anglicized her name to sound more English as Ellen O'sea and all we know is she came from Nagoya.

It seems that most genealogy websites only track Japanese Americans during the internment in WWII. Haven't had any luck with any international sites.
