  • Red Hair

My son has three of the red hair SNPs but he does not have red hair. I have one SNP for red hair and I have red hair. Dr Wilson says there are 33 variants in SDNA red hair test.

I didn't do any red hair tests. Some SNPs associated with red hair are in the FF raw data files. I don't need to do any red hair tests.

Interestingly, I got an email today from 23andMe (where my late father and I have tested), regarding "The Genetics of Hair Color." It included links to my "Red Hair Report," and my "Blond Hair Report." No idea why they sent it, but it didn't tell me anything new.

I had checked out the various SNPs that are related to red or blond hair, about two years ago. Here are the SNPs that I looked at, gathered from both a page at SNPedia, "Redheads," and an article on a 23andMe blog, "Researchers Find Link Between Red Hair and Avoiding the Dentist" (version in bold is associated with hair color indicated).

        Per the first link, http://snpedia.com/index.php/Redheads:
        Gene----Position-----Versions-------SNP---------------Alternate name for mutation
        MC1R---89986117---C or G or T---rs1805007*------R151C
        MC1R---89986144---C or T----------rs1805008**----R160W
        MC1R------------?-------------------------rs1805009***
        * known as Arg151Cys or R151C; associated with red hair, and in redheaded females, linked to being more responsive to the anesthetics pentazocine, anlbuphine, and butorphanol, often used by dentists
** known as Arg160Trp or R160W; associated with red hair in an Irish population
*** known as Asp294His or D294H; most common variant associated with red hair and poor tanning ability in one study

Per the second link, more at http://blog.23andme.com/news/snpwatc...g-the-dentist/:
23andMe Red Hair snps-----------Red Hair Version---Alternate name for mutation
        MC1R--89985913--rs34474212------C-----------------------S83P
        MC1R--89985918--rs1805006--------A-----------------------D84E
        MC1R--89986091--rs11547464------A-----------------------R142H
        MC1R--89986130--rs1110400--------C-----------------------I155T
        MC1R--89986546--i3002507----------T-----------------------D294H

My reports showed that I did not inherit the variants associated with red hair (although my father had one variant; he's described as being a carrier for red hair, not having it himself). My late mother had a sort of dark auburn hair in her youth; she never did any DNA testing, so I can't see what variants she had. In any case, I didn't get these red hair variants from either parent. One of my siblings has a patch of red hair at the nape of her neck; otherwise, no other red hair in my immediate family. A second cousin on my father's side does have red hair. My father has all Irish ancestry on his paternal side, German-Austrian/Swiss on his maternal side.

For blond hair, both my father and I had 3-4 variants associated with it. A chart showed that 28.3% of 23andMe customers with 3-4 variants reported having blond hair. Both my father and I had blond hair when young, that darkened as we aged. My paternal cousins have blond hair, even into adulthood. Per 23andMe's report for me:
Show genotypes in the HERC2, KITLG and SLC24A4 genes:

        23andMe Name---DNA Change---Genotype
        rs1289639900-------------G to T-------GT
        rs1667394-------------------C to T-------TT
        rs12821256-----------------T to C-------TT
Result: Has 3-4 variants associated with blond hair in people with European ancestry. Approximately 28% of 23andMe customers with this result report having blond hair.
My father had "TT" for all three.

thank you for all this info. My daughter is a redhead , I am not,her father is. I could not remember anyone in my family having red hair as I have to be a carrier for her to be. I was told my 3x grandma from Sicily had red hair.

Interesting! My mother's paternal grandmother (from the Peloponnese in Greece) was said to have had red hair. Her son, my grandfather, did not, although I guess he could have been a carrier. My maternal grandmother probably wasn't a carrier, as she had very dark hair and eyes (likely black hair when young), and I never heard that anyone in her family had red hair. Two of my mother's sisters, and her brother, had very dark brownish-black to black hair.

Both parents have to have the gene for a child to have red hair. so you can pass it for many generations and no red hair until a carrier "breeds" with another carrier.

I did not think I would have a red head as at the time I did not know about my 3xgrandma. Never even crossed my mind to think to ask. LOL

I have five children, two of them with red hair,so being carriers of the red hair gene doesn't always result in all the children being red haired. I have red hair and my wife doesn't, but six members of the previous generation in her family had red hair.

I found some of them on the internet. Some of them are from http://www.snpedia.com/index.php/Redheads.

The red hair report has been there for years, but they just added the one for blonde hair. I think they're trying to tell us that they're still working toward delivering more health and "trait" reports once their FDA issues get worked out.

They made sure to point out in their announcement that health reports are still being delivered to customers in Canada and the UK.

Yes, that's the big hope of 23andMe's management. They make no secret that their main and overriding purpose is to use their customers' health results to aid in research; researchers pay 23andMe for use of their customers' anonymous results. Providing individuals their personal health results is important to them, but secondary.

What's last and almost non-existent in their priorities is serving the interests of genealogists and adoptees. The recent e-mail from the CEO about their plans for this year made no mention of improving their ancestry and genealogy related features. The ability to more easily connect with and compare results with matches there is notoriously lacking. This has been a complaint from genealogists and adoptees there for years, but the management continues to ignore it, while still having advertising that's meant to appeal to especially adoptees hoping to find close relatives.

The singer, Adele, has red hair and was born in London. She is typical of the red-hair types found in Ireland. I would like a scientific study on red hair. Some people say that it is to do with the amount of cloud cover we get here in the Isles.
