  • FTDNA's new updated family trees

    What a piece of garbage.

Small fonts and I think most of the trees that were available to look at are now marked private.

The option to download disappeared rapidly.

No way to edit my own tree.

Thanks a lot for nothing, The old tree at least worked.

I am totally disgusted with this entire process. Hardly any work can be done on my matches because I'm unable to search in their trees for surnames (these are new matches within the last month who have a tree and surnames listed). Also, every time I click on a match's tree MY tree pops up . . The fonts are way too small. I have to click on my browser options to increase the size of the fonts and then when I go to another internet page I have to increase the font size.again. What a hassle.

Also, the chromosome tool is messed up. After adding three or so people to the browser from the home page and loading the results I'm unable to add others. The field doesn't work to add others. Plus, the matches who are loaded do not appear at the top of the page.

I can hardly do any work because these two areas of Family Tree are in such a mess. I can not believe Family Tree could be making a good impression on those who are looking for a DNA service

I thought it was only me. My relationship range is also totally messed up. My uncle is now my aunt and all the people on my father's side are now related to both. What happened to this site? I had recommended it to so many people. Now I have to rethink that.

IF you are using a mouse with a wheel you can use the wheel to zoom in and out.

I have a touch mouse, which essentially acts as a wheel. Scrolling is easy, but for things like the myFTDNA tree, it's hard to adjust size easily. It zooms very quickly. I do not see any control (+/- buttons) to zoom in and out, for those accessing the tree on a computer WITHOUT a scroll or touch mouse. Am I missing it? There were zoom controls in the prior version of the tree.

In my post above I meant to say after leaving my family tree (or someone else's tree) and go to another website I have to decrease the font size again.

I've been afraid to look at my trees! The last time FTDNA "improved" the trees, they lost all semblance of ease of use and clear presentation. I still want a simple pedigree view with just the basic information, reading left to right, without pictures and other extraneous "enhancements" that cause the pedigree to take forever to load and take up too much space, so that only a few generations are visible. While family trees can be complicated, a quick pedigree going back no more than 8 generations is more than sufficient as a starting point to see if there is an obvious connection with my own ancestry.

When I click on a match's tree icon my computer CPU gets maxed out for a long period of time and then my own family tree shows up.

Why on earth does FTDNA change any production software without testing it first?

Not happy at all with FTDNA.

I had that problem before the recent update to FTDNA's myFamilyTree (that is, my own family tree, or tree of person whose account I manage, showing up when clicking on a match's tree). Yes, it is still doing it with the new version. Usually the desired tree will show up if I try it again.

No idea how/why the tool to enlarge or shrink the trees disappeared, and no one on the design team noticed that. FTDNA does need to keep working on the trees. The latest "improvements" are still glitchy.

On a positive note, over the weekend I was able to view trees for two matches to a cousin whose account I manage, and found the connection to him by comparing the two trees to his known ancestry. Sweet!

and do we have any idea when this feature is going to be corrected?

If enough people submit Customer Service forms complaining about it, then maybe something will happen.

Complaining was already tried the last time the family tree feature was "improved". It has taken so long for the next iteration of "improvements", that most people have forgotten the last complaint cycle. But go ahead, point out what doesn't work and what changes would improve functionality, accessibility, and performance. Eventually someone will be in a position to make real improvements.

It seems the new and improved family tree feature is *still* not working. There are several problems: (1) It takes forever to load. I sometimes have to refresh my browser (Firefox, Chrome) after 30 seconds or so before anything displays, (2) if a tree is displayed it is always my own tree, and (3) when the content displayed is not my tree, it is a notice that the tree I am trying to access is set to private. Essentially the same problems that Tenn4ever identified a week ago. There is nothing on the FTDNA site describing this problem or when we can expect that it be repaired. Is anyone having success accessing trees?

I am! Most of the time I get my tree, I back out and request the tree again and it loads the correct tree. Some do show up as private. The 'Search' function fails to allow an entry most of the time.
