  • MTDNA coding region problems with matches

I did the MTfull sequence test in May 2015. I have about 4 pages of matches, 2 of the pages are at a genetic distance of zero. So all in all, quite a few matches. I even have one match at a distance 0 who also matches autosmally. So since my direct maternal line is a brick wall, I am keen to follow this up. Of course her grandmother was adopted, so the mystery continues.

I tested my son earlier this year.He doesn't match me on the coding regions. My 2nd cousin tested last month, he also doesn't match me at coding region level. He matches my son. I haven't received a match at coding region since 9th of November 2015. My son and my cousin are in a separate group and these have new matches being added.

I have contacted FTDNA support multiple times about this problem.

One response was '..Our IT Department is still working on a solution. It doesn't appear to be a simple issue and is taking sometime to resolve..'

I asked them which of our results is correct and they told me both are.

I have no idea what is going on and do wonder what is the point of the MtDNA full sequence test. Does anyone know what is going on ? How can my son not match me at coding regions level and why are all new matches going to a 'new group ?'

    thanks.

It is a known problem reported by many people. They really need to fix it asap. Just like they need to fix the Geno 2.0 NextGen transfers asap. They have been taking way to long to fix the problems.

To compare the two files download both of the FASTA files from FTDNA then upload them to http://dna.jameslick.com/mthap/ and you should see the exact same extras in blue. The other colors are defined at http://dna.jameslick.com/mthap/FAQ.html

    Q. What do all these different colors mean?

    A. Matches are shown in green, Mismatches as crimson, Untested markers as gray, No-Calls as orange, Flips as lime, Extras as blue, and markers for which you have a reversion as indigo.
Only tell us if they match exactly or not. Don't post the specific mutations.

I had a look at your profile and it would seem from your name that you are male.

Your son will not have the same mtDNA as you, it comes from his mother and her mother etc.

Your second cousin matches your son so I will assume the familial connection is through the mother of your son.

This does not appear to be a problem at all, you are looking at the wrong genetic line. You need to be looking at the mtDNA of your mother's line.
Have you contacted all your GD0 matches.

You are most like jumping to conclusions. There are a lot of names used by both sexes. The fact that Moonta contacted FTDNA and was told "..Our IT Department is still working on a solution. It doesn't appear to be a simple issue and is taking sometime to resolve.." instead of being told that they aren't going to match due to being different lineages. Her son and her 2nd cousin match on the coding region. That's most likely because they are from the same maternal line.

There is a known problem with the people not showing as matches when they are matches.

Apologies. I am female. I created this profile when I was logged in to my dad's account (which I admin). The issue is with my mtDNA haplogroup which is V10a. It is also the mtdna haplogroup of my son and my cousin. I admin my son's account but not my cousins. So the following is based on comparing myself and my son but since my cousin is descended from the same female ancestor along a direct female line, I can be sure that his group will be the same as ours.

The two of us match exactly. No differences.

The issue is with FTDNA and I believe it is not just with my mtdna haplogroup but is across others. Aside from it '..being a display issue..' which makes no sense at all, I have no idea why we don't match. All I know is since the 9th of November 2015 I have received no new matches at coding level, so something has happened after that date. And any new matches are going in to a new group. Of course none of them are any the wiser that they have a hell of lot more matches and what they are seeing is only a small amount of their matches.

Sorry for whining but I am totally exasperated with all of this and the lack of adequate communication from FTDNA is very annoying.

Just saw this thread. Looks like the same problem I have.

My apologies also for jumping to the conclusion you were male based on the profile name, it appeared to have offered a simple solution.

              I stand corrected.
I hope the problem gets sorted out.

(After being admonished by Armando and out of curiosity I checked on the frequency of Ross as a female christian name, almost unheard of, except in Scotland.)

All good . I should have clarified who I was and I didn't realise that the profile showed as male.

Hopefully they'll sort this out sooner rather than later. As I certainly won't be buying anymore mtdna tests until they do.
