  • Gedcom download fix?

Rather than hanging about online I prefer to download stuff for leisurely study as and when convenient.

I would like to do this for FTDNA Gedcom webpages but because they default to only 4 generations it cannot be done. (unless you know better?)

I see why the 4 default may heve been chosen by FTDNA but defaults never suit everybody whereas totality should do so with perhaps a provision to set one's own default.

A default to all would be best for me and since downloads clear the airwaves compared to online loitering it might be best for FTDNA and other users.

Best of all, while I'm here, would be a straightforward Gedcom download facility rather than an archive webpage if there are no objections.

Such Gedcom downloads can, as you no doubt know, be pushed directly into one's own favourite genealogy program for very convenient handling.

I run windows 7 64 bit and had upgraded to IE 9 when I was trying to use the gedcom upload without luck on Y-search. I learned that IE 9 is not fully compatible with Ancestry's website and in fact would not allow me to upload some of my pics. They told me to use an older version of IE. Well I could not easily find one that worked on my system so I used Firefox 4 which was also recommended.
After I got that up and running, and it is a great browser, I tried uploading to Y-search on a whim and it worked great. Yes I know you should not have to do this and it is a simple scripting thing on the part of their IT department to make it a fully comprehensive browser neutral site, but you can go this way if you want and like I said it is a great browser with lots of neat customization ability and add on support.

For a very Tech Company like FTDNA you would expect a good IT tech department. I don't know if it is ability, staff or both but there are a lot of glitches. Haplotree keeps posting wrong groups and then fixing itself, even wrong language the other day, no updates to project results, upload problems on Y-search and a few others. I don't even think they review forums enough to be aware of all the issues. Maybe they need to outsource a little to catch up. Just my opinion, think I would test here for the database but some of the competitors know their clients are not all science geeks and like things easy simple and functional.

BTW Firefox also correctly remembers my PW so log in is also fixed with it now.

        Dowloading GEDCOMs

"Best of all, while I'm here, would be a straightforward Gedcom download facility rather than an archive webpage if there are no objections."

I have been able to download GEDCOMs to text files (using Firefox) and work a little Excel magic to convert them to actual GEDCOM files to be imported into Roots Magic. I now have close to 80 GEDCOMs in one database file on Roots Magic and have been connecting the families. I still have lots of clean up to do to normalize place names and get rid of all the "unknowns" that clog up the "look for duplicates" function.

I don't think it ever occured to me that my gedcoms on FTDNA could be downloaded. I've never put my tree out on ancestry.com because of the ease in which it (and any errors it might contain) could be replicated. I don't mind sharing, but I like to know who has it. I'll have to rethink what I put out there.

Susan, I don't think you need to worry. If Gaye wants someone's tree, she'll get it.. even if she has to dig through the census records herself. The bonus is, the lazy people that would pass on errors won't go through the trouble.

If anyone tried it and got some relationship errors in the downloaded GEDCOM file, the issues should be resolved. Send me an email is there are any other problems. Thanks!

Thanks JK for the download option.

I have to do some real-life stuff unfortunately - why can't I win the lottery?- but will have a go some time soon.

When you figure out how to win the lottery, let me know. The page is simple to use, copy/paste the source into the box, click Submit and it spits out a GEDCOM right away. It names them after the person, so you can click Reset to clear the box and paste in the next without needing to reload the page. It will just keep converting/downloading them for you.
