  • Chromosome Browser Results

I manage both my daughter and my grandson's accounts. When I go into my grandson's account and choose his mother and go to chromosome browser, it looks like every segment comes from his mother, I mean the whole chromosome for every chromosome. When I go into my account and choose my mother, I get a mix of segments on each chromosome. Is this an error? Has anyone ever experienced this?

What estimate of relationship does FamilyTreeDNA think you and your mother have?

This article has diagrams of how various relationships look in the chromosome browser.
What is a crossover anyway, and why do I, as a genetic genealogist, care? A crossover on a chromosome is where the chromosome is cut and the DNA from two different ancestors is spliced together dur…

      Sounds impossible...

Could you please create a PNG or JPEG of the Chromosome Browser (please crop a screenshot to just show the relevant parts, no names etc.) and post it here?

      Thank you - Mr. W

Are all kits tested by FTDNA, or did you upload any of them from another vendor?

        Thanks,

We have two of each chromosome, one from mother which is a random mixture of her pair, and one from father which is a random mixture of his pair.
Chromosome Browsers merge the two into one due to nature of testing unable to distinguish which is which.
Parent child will match allow the entire length of each chromosome.

As others of stated, above needs some clarification, not sure if you have typo or referring to a non parent child relationship ie) you to grandson.

How can I Post you my file that I copied the chromosome browser to. I have tried to copy it in here, but it does not work. You are talking to a 70 year old who is not computer literate.

If you have the file made, when making a post look for the paperclip button found next to the smilie face. On the new window click Browse to search for your file on your computer. Once you find it select it and click upload. This will attach the file to your post. It won't be viewable to us for a while until it is approved.

I have figured out how to do screenshots and have a link to it. Thanks: Sandy

Screenshots is a tool in Firefox that allows you to save an image of all or parts of a web page.

I see the screenshot. What is the issue you have with it? It clearly shows whoever you are comparing in orange must be either a parent or child of the kit's test taker. The gray areas are sections the test does not look at and the left over blues are nothing just a way to round out the bars.

Yes. That is absolutely what a parent/child relationship looks like in the chromosome browser.

It also looks like that for monozygotic twins. I'm still trying to convince my twins that those few grey/black areas just mean those are untested portions. Aunt/nephew as well if the aunt is an mz twin of the mother. etc.

So, how do I find out which segments of the chromosome my grandson inherited from his mother and which from his father. His father died before I could get his DNA done. The Chromosome browser has each chromosome, every segment, coming from his mother. It states that he and his mother share 22 segments, which is wrong. How could each chromosome be only one segment?

When talking about DNA segments, each segment is simply a continuous section of DNA that matches. So for parent/child comparisons a segment could be the whole chromosome. This is normal. Since the test can't split up chromosome pairs, it is normal for the test to show that a parent/child pair matches completely (or completely with a few minor differences). What it just means is that half of all chromosomes are a match not that the full chromosome is a match.

Think of it like a burger with double meat where the meat represents the DNA. When we say half of that meat (the DNA) is shared we don't mean we cut the burger in half. We just mean one of the meat patties will match. This is why the chromosome browser will show a child match completely with each individual parent. The test can't tell us if the match comes from the bottom patty or the top patty, just that one or the other (or even both) matches.

As The_Contemplator and prairielad have explained, we get a maternal and paternal copy of each chromosome, so a child will show a complete match on each chromosome when compared to either parent. FTDNA does not have a way to show the two copies for each chromosome in the Chromosome Browser tool.

If you want your grandson's match list to identify his maternal matches, create or upload a tree to the "myFamilyTree" in his account, and then link his already-FF-tested mother to her place on his tree. Then, you'll see a pink female symbol next to some of his matches, so at least you'll know the matches that are related on his maternal side. Be aware that those without the pink female symbol may or may not be on his father's side.

If there are any of his paternal relatives who have tested, or would agree to test, such as a grandparent, aunt or uncle, linking them to his tree would then show a blue male symbol to show some of the relatives related on that paternal side.

You can read more about how to use the Family Matching Tool in the FTDNA Learning Center. More details are in the Family Matching System page, and also at Roberta Estes' articles "Family Tree DNA Introduces Phased Family Finder Matches" and "Additional Relatives Added to Phased Family Matches at Family Tree DNA."
