  • Put In Percentages Next to Amount of DNA Shared

On the Family Finder page where it lists the DNA relatives, it will show the shared cM. I recommend adding the percentage DNA shared. Since a lot of people are looking at relationships from percentage shared it may help them in determining the relationship. For example if someone thinks that someone is their first cousin, it's easier to see 12.50% rather than taking the amount of dna shared, doing the math and seeing what the percentage is.

But there is a good chance they would not see 12.5%, but some number from 7.31%-13.8% range (according to http://isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_statistics).

You are correct. The 12.5% is an example of the average. Seeing the percentages will let a person see the variance from the average. It also gives information to show that a perceived relationship may not be what it should be. I put in this request because I manage an account for someone. There is a uncle/nephew relationship in the DNA relatives list. A full uncle/nephew relationship should be about 25%. I had the amount of cM staring at me for over a year but it wasn't until recently when I manually calculated the percentage shared that I saw that the amount of cM came to 15%, far below the 25% average. Had I seen the percentage a year ago it would ahve been better. I would think that this is an easy progaming change to make.

The only problem I am seeing is that in my opinion most of FTDNA customers are clearly overwhelmed by scientific data. Seeing a label cousin is expected. Seeing cM values is relegated to the Advanced View. Percentages would need to be in the Advanced View.

Even then, FTDNA would need to have an explanation page similar to the ISOGG one, that would cover cM and percentages and so on. And that page maybe even should be a more extensive one...

I mention the percentage shared because 23andme provides that inforamtion in their DNA Relatives information so it's right there on the screen. People talk about percentages on the forums so I don't think that the FTDNA customer would be overwhelmed with the information.

cMs are more meaningful beyond the closet relatives (siblings, parents, children).

Family Finder is only sampling a small percentage of the entire autosomal DNA. The percentage figures based on the Family Finder results might be very different from the numbers obtained when comparing the entire autosomal DNA.

Actually, I do not know whether anybody had a Family Finder test and FGS (full genome sequencing) and compared the results.
