  • Y Haplogroup on female search results

As a female, when I click on the Y-DNA tab of my home page while logged in, it says, "Are you sure of your paternal lineage? By testing a male relative for their Y-DNA, you can confirm the genealogy of a direct paternal line." I assumed this meant that if I purchased a DNA test for my father or brother, I would have access to this information through my own results. This turned out not to be the case, but I would like to suggest that perhaps it could be in future.

When I use advanced matching and "select all", the search results for other females say "F" in the Y column. However, in many cases, further digging reveals that they have a confirmed father or brother Known Relationship match, as do I, and so there is actually Y DNA data to compare. In these cases I'd rather see "Not a match" or, as the case may be, the number of steps in the match. I'd also like to see the Y haplogroup of these matches' father or brother where a confirmed relationship exists.

Yes, I have actually asked them if they could do this, but was told that they would not. It would be a great tool to have included especially for search reasons that you have mentioned. And let me mention another possible scenario. I found I have a match on Gedmatch that has the same paternal haplogroup as I do (my brother's test). According to Gedmatch they tested at 23andme. When I wrote to them, the person who manages the kit is a female, I match her brother. She compared me to her, but I do not match her. Upon reviewing my matches closer here at FTDNA I see she transferred the data over, and I match her brother here too. He has no haplogroup in though because he would need to test his Y DNA here. Long convoluted story short, (I'll try anyway). What if he did test his Y here and he for sure matched my brother on the Y, and if my brother's sample was also tested for Family Finder but these two guys DID NOT match on Family Finder. You can see the Family Finder match between me and the other guy, and if the Y DNA results could also be associated with the female's account. Well you get the point!

I know 23andme will link a father's Y DNA to a daughter's kit, not sure about a brother's though. 23andme does not do haplogroup matching. Oh well for the time being I have my paternal haplogroup written in after my most distant known paternal ancestor.

If one were to upload a family tree to their family finder kit or MT-DNA kit one could include a Y-Search Number on their specific male ancestor or include Haplogroup with SNP. On Gedmatch for instance people list R1b M222 as their Haplogroup rather than putting R1b...............

What a great idea! Thanks. I wish it would catch on.

Your welcome, I wish I could take full credit though! Another poster here mentioned to do this awhile ago. And yes I wish it would catch on too. However as an advanced search feature, especially for someone with many Family Finder matches this would be a most helpful added feature.
