I am feeling pretty satisfied with the new MyOrigins results. I guess I am in the minority here, but the new MyOrigins ends up mirroring almost exactly all of the calculators I use on Gedmatch.

When I first used FTDNA several years ago, my results were 88% Orcadian (European) and 12% Middle Eastern.

When MyOrigins came out, my results switched to 99% European, with 1% unaccounted for. My Middle Eastern totally disappeared.

MyOrigins 2.0 shows 96% European, with 2% Central/South Asian and 2% Middle Eastern. This is more in line with the calculators at Gedmatch which almost all show me as 2-4% South Asian, with some Middle Eastern. This is the first time that FTDNA has shown the South Asian for me. My European break-down also makes perfect sense to me and also seems to fall in line with the Gedmatch calculators.

I have finally figured out after several years that the Indian/Middle Eastern mix I have is likely Roma. I have a grandmother who I suspect now was a Roma (gypsy) based on her appearance and where she was from, but she always said she was "Cherokee." Turns out that was not the case, or at least not the full story.

In addition ,I have three different kit results in the ftdna database and before the update all three had slightly different results. Now all three have virtually the exact same results so the algorithm is behaving more consistently for me as well. Don't know about anyone else out there with multiple kits transferred to ft.

Nobody seems to have commented on the fact that FTDNA uses "British Isles" as a rather vague ethnic classification. Obviously Scottish, English, Welsh, Irish etc. are relatively recent labels, more geographical and political than ethnic, but DNA research in the Isles has demonstrated real differences in haplogroups in different areas. A variant of Y DNA R1b found mainly in eastern and north-eastern Scotland has been labelled R1b-Pict, as this was the ancient Pictland or "Caledonia". There are noticeable differences from the Dalriadic R1b found in testees from the west of Scotland.

Many people (including myself) are complaining about unexpected and inexplicable My Origins results. But there are some strange anomalies out there. For instance, I come from a former fishing village on the east coast of Scotland. My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Cunningham. The vast majority of male Scottish Cunninghams who have been tested are the predictable Y DNA R1b, but two male Cunninghams whose ancestors came from my village - one in the States and one in Australia - did the FTDNA test and came up R1a, and not the Scandinavian R1a found in Britain that suggests Viking ancestors, but a sub-type more commonly found in Poland and elsewhere in eastern Europe. Some things must remain a mystery - we just don't know enough about our distant ancestors' movements.

Not sure. For us it works perfectly as to place of birth for the last 175 years but then misses all sorts of stuff if you go back any farther.

Now I am only 93% European with 83% Eastern European, 5% Scandinavian and 7% Southeastern European. Fine except the missing 7% of what used to be European is now just a bunch of BS traces <2% each from bizarre places like North and Central America (impossible), Oceania (impossible), Siberian (possible), Finland (possible but used to be solid 7%) and Central Asia (highly unlikely).

I think FTDNA really needs to rethink all this traces BS. I know they qualify it as possible "noise" but that is not helpful at all and they should put it back into the more probable classifications.

Very disappointed. Origins need a reboot!!!!
It would be common for Russians to start picking up Siberian and Central Asian and so on since they were hit more by Mongol invasions. It would actually be expected that they would score more than trace in many cases but the main category now seems to have subsumbed more of that stuff.

Remember Eastern Europe is a huge, huge region and unless you match exactly what it primes in on you should start picking up extra regions, these will be ancient population wide-signals though and not a sign of a some great grandparent (unless you compare to other from your region and see that you get more of something than average).

Interesting. Geno 2.0 NG looks the best for you but what is really interesting is that your Geno 2.0 NG does not match your MyOrigins 1.0 as it seems to for everyone else. Did you take Geno 2.0 NG Dec. 2016 or later? It seems that since then, new testers, get new regions and different results (I'd have thought they would be the same as MyOrigins 2.0 but your results don't match that either so maybe the new Geno 2.0 NG stuff is good. If so, I wish they would update Geno 2.0 NG pre-Dec 2016 testers and give us the new results.)

I'm wondering what happened to my Scandinavia? My y-DNA haploground is I-L22 (Nordic), so it doesn't make sense?

                          • Horrible.
Old results: 80% British Isles, 10% Central and West Europe.
New results: British isles 28%, Central and West Europe 72%.
Known situation: British Isles 87.5 % from a dozen different counties. Central and West Europe 10%, East Europe 2.5%.

My brother got similar Old results to mine. His New results are British isles 48%, Central and West Europe 30%, East Europe 3%. So he is different from the real situation (except for East Europe) and now very different from me.

                            • I believe I've figured it out:

They put all the numbers in a jar and then draw 4 or 5 out for each kit. I heard there's a game called bingo that does that.

                              • Confused with the New My Origins Results

I've included my old results and below that are my new My Origins along with my mom's and my youngest sisters results.
I don't understand what happened to my British Isles percentage. My paternal side has been traced to England so I knew it should be high but it actually decreased with the new version. What I am also perplexed by is my mom's side. Her maternal ancestry is Hungarian and her paternal side is British and German. It doesn't appear to be a very high percentage for Eastern European unless they count Hungary as part of Central Europe. We do not have any knows Jewish ancestry and where the Sephardic Jewish ancestry comes from I have no clue whatsoever. Before the new version came out she had no Jewish percentage. Plus neither myself nor my youngest sister show any of this. When looking at my youngest sisters results she barely shows any Eastern European percentage which I find odd as well. It just seems like the newer version is way off from our known ancestry.
