  • Ancient Origins

I just noticed the ancientOrigins on my dashboard (or, I guess it's Ancient European Origins?). Very cool. My results are:

    12% Metal Age Invader
    42% Farmer
    45% Hunter Gatherer
    0% Non-European

Interestingly, my results only total 99%. MyOrigins also only add up to 99%, and I understand that is a result of statistical rounding. However, in the description of Non-European, it is stated there is not enough genetic data to elaborate and to refer to your myOrigins if you have Non-European results. On myOrigins I do show 1% North African (on 23andMe I show a small amount of Subsaharan African). Is it possible that missing 1% from my ancient results could include African contributions? For example, if it was less than 1%? My thinking is that even with statistical rounding, there is at least .5% something not European.

ANCIENT ORIG. I think they mean OF YOUR EUROPEAN SIDE

Hi, I know that I'm not 100% European (28.8% native american verified by FTDNA, 23&Me, Nat.Geo, AncestryDNA), also I can see it in the mirror. So I assume that these are the percentages of my European side the Ancient Origins are breaking down, rather than a completely new interpretation of my total ancestry...

        FOLLOWUP-Ancient Origins percentages suddenly changed!

        Oh my,
When I went right back in to have another look at Ancient Origins, the percentages were suddenly different! Before it said something like 11%, 42% 49% and 0 Non-Euro. This time is said 9%, 37%, 30%, and 25% Non European. I don't know what to make of this sudden flip flop, although it's closer to what I know myself to be...

            Here's my two cents worth:

            12% Metal Age Invader
            43% Farmer
            46% Hunter-Gatherer
            O% non-European

That's what it says. It looks to me like 101% total.

So quite a lot of Hunter-Gatherer in Scandinavia?

ftdna: "The hunter-gatherer subsistence strategy dominated the landscape of the European continent for thousands of years until populations that relied on farming and animal husbandry migrated into the area during the middle to late Neolithic Era around 8,000–7,000 years ago. Individuals found at the Loschbour, Luxembourg, and Motala, Sweden, sites have mitochondrial U5 or U2 haplogroups, which is typical of Hunter-Gatherers in Europe and Y-chromosome haplogroup I".

                            My AncientOrgins: (German/Polish)
                            15% Metal Age Invader
                            40% Farmer
                            45% Hunter-Gatherer

My husband (German with some Norwegian and Italian roots)
                            11% Metal Age Invader
                            47% Farmer
                            42% Hunter-Gatherer

On the myOrigin board, I have 4% more Middle-Eastern roots than him, maybe that reflects in the percentage of "Metal age invader".

                              Ancient Origins

You can find the explication for Ancient Origins calculation at the Gedmatch Ancient calculator site: your DNA is compared to some ancient samples that are many thousand years old from Russia, Siberia, Sweden, Hungary, Poland, etc. There are also 2 samples form USA and Brazil. If there is some match, its fun, but I would not take these results serious. For it example, my DNA matches with ötzi. I do not think that he was one of my cousins....
