    STRs and SNPs

Y111 has it's place in helping people further explore their close Y67 matches (if they have any) but it's not the first place to go for people who are interested in exploring their sub clade. Depending on what matches you get Y37 can often be good enough in shining a light on what snips to test.

Agreed, all that most need is 12 STRs to join the projects, once one knows his basic haplogroup, all one need is the SNPs Penal for that haplogroup, and in case their are more than one penals for that haplogroup then it is better to use much cheaper YSEQ SNP test.

R-M269's don't need to upgrade STR's, they need to snp test. But, yes, it will cost more money. FTDNA has long nickel-and-dimed their customers and, IMO, doesn't offer enough practical guidance, instead relying on groups and administrators. If you join a group with an engaged, informed administrator...great. You might find what you're looking for with the minimum required expenditure. But in my experience there are a lot of administrators that are disengaged, misguided, or uninformed about current Y findings. When my grandpa's CTS1751 snp came in positive, I sent an email to all his matches informing them to see if any were interested in exploring whether they are also CTS1751. I only got one response, from a group administrator who manages accounts for those in her group, who said that her guys were all L21, not CTS1751. CTS1751 is downstream of L21 and all CTS1751+'s would also be L21+ too. Later, I did get one match to test CTS1751 and he turned out to be CTS1751+ but I guess I may never know about the other matches. And that's a problem if you are trying to pursue this hobby to see where you fit in the bigger picture.

I understand why the prediction went one way and now is stepping back. And at this point I think I'll just leave it as the 111 marker test just costs too much. Maybe someday I'll see a point to digging really deeply into my genetics, but at the moment I'm interested in my more recent genealogy.
I made that decision when I was dropped back to R-M269 from CTS4466. I too, am more interested in my more recent genealogy. My autosomal test confirms my Daly paper tree to 1835, but my Y test has given me nothing so far. My Daly surname doesn't even appear until my 60th Y match and not again until many, many more matches later, and I am in the Daly Surname, Munster Irish and CTS4466+ groups. Most Dalys, who have paid for Y-111 are also stuck in R-M269. What's the point in spending any more money for more nothing?

I think FTDNA's IT department needs a good pest control company.

That is on all the kits that have Y-DNA haplogroup R, I have access too. Waiting for FTDNA...

Is the Big Y test all inclusive? No, it has some weak spots, but I think the benefits outweigh them.

I hope one of Big Y knowledgeable people does answer your query in detail, but to me the only barrier to Big Y testing is the financial one. As the Big Y test has easy to understand advantages:
    • It could be cheaper or at least comparable in cost to testing of individual SNPs! Likely many SNPs need to be tested, and then some additional ones to confirm that there are no more SNPs that are testing positive below your terminal one.
    • It is way faster to get a Big Y result in a couple of months (individual results vary, consult https://www.familytreedna.com/learn/...-results-take/ before proceeding etc.), then waiting a couple of month for each SNP tested.
    • Big Y is testing SNPs that are not on the FTDNA tree yet, so you might get deeper, than when ordering individual SNP tests.

Although it is rather certain that your brother is positive for R-M269, as Tenn4ever indicated, only SNP testing can confirm the haplogroups (SNPs) your brother belongs to.

When viewing your brother account, you should see a link to a Big Y test, that could be your next option.

Same here. I got the same message on the haplotree page in my father's account, even though he has tested down to a subclade of R1b-Z253 (L1308) via SNP panel testing. "Your Confirmed Haplogroup is R-L1308" is just above the "undifferentiated" message.
