  • Bug Fixes - 10/22/2014

The following bugs were fixed this morning:
    • The Y-DNA Results section wasn't displaying on the myFTDNA homepage for Y-DNA transfers.
    • Advanced Y-STR results weren't available from the myFTDNA homepage or the MyDNA - Other Results menu.
    • Corrected the Project Administrator default setting to be "Limited" instead of "Read Only".
    • Restored the cropping ability to the myFTDNA profile picture upload in Account Settings.
    • Fixed the "Download All Matches to Excel" option on the Chromosome Browser to abide by the new Family Finder privacy settings.
    • Updated myFamilyTree to show the correct silhouette. Some users were seeing a male silhouette instead of a female one.

There were also some fixes released on Monday:
    • Kits with Y-DNA or mtDNA results weren't able to see the full profile of their Y-DNA and mtDNA matches after doing the autosomal transfer free trial -- instead, they were seeing the limited profile that is shown for the autosomal free trial.
    • Restored the link to the Interpreting Your Results PDF in myFTDNA.

        Y-67 results not showing

Not sure if this is the correct place to report this but...

This morning my Y-67 results indicate they were completed but nothing is showing for them. On the drop down menu on my Y matches page it's still only showing Y-37 as the highest marker to run a report on.

          Me too...

Although my 'matches' page shows Y-DNA67 to be complete, all is the same as it was for Y-DNA37. However, when I check the status, it seems the Y61-67 portion is still incomplete. So, the Y-DNA67 is NOT complete.

Is there any way I can check my Y matches using the 60 markers that are completed?

Yes, mine is similar. It says NEW matches but when I click on the matches they are exactly the same and the drop down menu where the number of markers can be selected it only has 12 25 and 37.

I checked the orders and the indication is that the Y-67 is complete but then there is another place that shows the latter two sections are not complete. So that means only the 38-47 marker of the test is complete.

However, when the Y-37 test was being processed it would show the matches for each section of that test when they came in such as first the 12 marker results and so on.

Been waiting so long for these and the to see NEW matches it was disappointing when nothing was there

The Matches page doesn't show any status messages, so you must be talking about the homepage or the Order History page, correct?

There seems to be a bug where the test is showing complete once one of the panels in the test is complete, rather than after the entire test completes. I think this issue was previously reported to IT, but I'll double-check. Sorry about the confusion.

No, matches are only displayed for the complete 12, 25, 37, 67 and 111 markers levels.

                Order status

It's very nice to have occasional updates about progress and fixes. Thank you for keeping us informed. It helps.
                __________________

I recently reported that order history status shows a completion date when any one section is finished, yet there can still be other panels remaining. No actual matches were shown at the lower levels until the entire test was complete. This was for Y37 upgrade to Y67.

It *IS* confusing to show a completion date when it is not actually so. Posting a completion date for the entire order, when in reality only a panel is reported, is misleading and creates disappointment where there should be none.

This is the response I received from an "Information Specialist" when I submitted a ticket as an individual family member:

"I do agree with you that the completion date for the whole test would make more sense to be displayed but this would be as a person who is interested in only the matching portion of the test. There are other genealogists who are also very interested in the individual marker values at the various level of testing via group projects and whatnot."

I took this to mean that the display is the way FTDNA wants it and that's how it's going to stay. There's only so much moaning and groaning folks can/will do before deciding to stop providing feedback.

On the other hand, I waited and then reported this issue again as a small project admin and received this answer:

"Your issue with the myFTDNA page for kit 123456 showing that results are completed while they are still in progress, has been replicated and directly reported to IT for you."

So, I hope this is more correct and IT is going to at least consider posting a completion date only when a test is really complete, not panel by panel.

Do I understand correctly -- this is not a privacy setting per se, but a choice about whether to see immediate/close/distant/speculative relatives?

                  https://my.familytreedna.com/account-settings.aspx

And both parties are affected. If a match doesn't want to view his/her speculative relatives, then I can't see him/her either. I compared my download today with a recent one, and four people are gone.

                    Angelia:
Sorry about the differing responses. There was a little confusion over whether this was a deliberate change or a bug, so Customer Support responded with the information that they had at the time. I'm fairly sure it's a bug, though, and we're working on providing examples to IT so they can take a closer look at the issue.

                    Ann:
Well, some might consider them preferences, others might consider them privacy settings But yes, those are the settings I mean. Those FF match settings were added fairly recently. Before, all matches were shown, and there were no settings to enable or disable them. Now, there are match settings for the different FF match levels, and they do indeed affect both parties, just like the Y-DNA and mtDNA match settings. The fix this week applied the new settings to the download files.

I hope FTDNA will reconsider this "fix". I keep spreadsheets (one for each kit) of downloaded chromosome browser data that I annotate and compare against one another to separate out ancestral lines. Having matches disappear out from under me is really going to confuse things if I/when I purchase FF kits for additional relatives.

I agree. Many of us download in Excel & store data. When the characteristics of that data shift, misinterpretations can occur. I want every matching event to have one, immutable, unchanging match date. I sort by match date & name & append what is new. I don't like it when cm counts are modified, even slightly. I don't like it when names are changed (maiden to married & back again); indeed I would prefer a matching key OTHER than name. The new Family Tree compels the change in kit name to match tree name. We should be able to link kits to the tree without changing the name in either the tree or the kit. A lot of female participants in FF use their married names, but in a tree, everyone knows to use the maiden name. Linking them forces one or the other to change.

And I don't like it when matches from months ago disappear & then re-appear several months later. We don't know if FF is simply making better kinship calculations based on data, or if settings are being tweaked.

When you are working with an Excel spreadsheet that contains over 5,000 names of matches, this stuff matters.

                          @Katydid & @Timothy

Your posts are targeting Family Tree DNA, as if it were their DNA samples. These were DNA owners who had withdrawn their permissions to share the results. As simple as that. And quite possibly they had only removed permissions to share speculative matches.

They could have even asked for withdrawal of their DNA from the database altogether...

If your cousin tells you to not phone them ever again and changes her or his phone number, do you go against the phone company?

P.S. I have submitted a request for an enhancement to FTDNA, to separate e-mail notification settings from sharing/privacy settings. I can imagine some people having nothing against sharing, but seeing no other choice to stop e-mail notifications.

I hope anyone who chooses to remove their kit is no longer able to see ANY of their matches.

I use the DNA Segment Analyzer which uploads our Family Tree DNA. I had a strong match there on a segment and now that match isn't appearing on my Family Tree matches.

These people should not be allowed to have any access if they remove their kits.

                              Yes, I am targeting FTNDA

I know that owners have ultimate control over their samples, and, although I'd hate to see people remove themselves entirely from the database, I recognize that is their right.

However, this was an active change on FTDNA's part, hence the complaint. It seems from various threads that people in many cases are clicking on these settings without understanding what they have done... leading to chaos for those of us who maintain databases to triangulate our matches.

I agree with you about separating email notifications from privacy settings - maybe that's the source of confusion because I don't understand why most people would have a need to turn off speculative matches. The match list is sorted by default in descending order of relationship already; you can just stop looking after the first few pages. (And surely people aren't getting bombarded by emails from speculative matches. I get a few a month, even though I have a statement under "About Me" that says "PLEASE contact me.")

What kind of email notifications are you getting regarding Family Finder? I've never gotten any for speculative matches.
