The free trial folks get a very limited preview of Family Finder, with most of the features locked.
* They can see their top 20 matches with first initial and last name only, and they can use Chromosome Browser for those 20 matches.
* They do NOT get access to: matches' email addresses, matches' family trees, matches' full profiles, notes, ICW, known relationships, download files, filters/search, myOrigins.
Honestly, I don't think anyone thought that the top 3 surnames would be of interest to paying customers since you can view/filter/search all of your matches in the database already. But if this is of interest, then we can ask the product team to consider adding this for everyone.

If you were more communicative about what is going on then it would be easier to give credit where it is due. I am not aware of any communication to existing customers that explains what you have just told us in the answer to my post. Tell us up front what you are doing and why and you will be spared from many frustrations and irrelevant questions.

Roberta Estes blogged about the transfer offer yesterday, here: http://dna-explained.com/ . The preview shows top 20 matches' surname lists but not pedigrees or profile information. They don't get the whole enchilada until they pay for it!

@Lincoln, You're right. But if they recruit four more people to get a free transfer, at least one or two of those may opt to pay for full access, which means more matches for us. I don't feel at all taken advantage of. This has been a great move on Family Tree's part - good for growing the company, and good for growing our match lists.

It could benefit FTDNA assuming that the people transferring their DNA info here aren't turned off by the lack of common surnames on the 20 matches they get. On my first 20 matches I have 11 lists of names, if you consider one of those lists is just one name. An average of about 50% for surnames and way less than that for actual pedigrees seems to be a regular pattern for matches that I see.

Is the to 20 list static?
This was a question posted on the DNA-NEWBIE list. Is the sneak preview list of the top 20 surnames updated, so you would learn if a closer relative was added to the database? My assumption is that the list is static, based on the database at the time of the upload, but I thought I should check for sure.

So far my known cousins who have tested do not show up in each other's test and I and my son ( prior testers) show up in all so it seems to be a static list.

The "teaser" screen looks exactly the same as the regular matches screen, with the following differences:
Many of the icons are inactive when you click them (ie it asks you to unlock the account.)
All the match names only show the first initial (no first name, but there is the surname).
There is an advertising banner at the top with a button for unlocking instructions and a number giving you how many matches you can unlock. The number is nothing different from a regular account (ie take your number of match pages, multiple by 10 and adjust slightly if your last page is not a full 10 matches).

Yes, if the match typed data into their surname interests, that data appears. I am talking about the little "blue i" icon on the far right on the match line. What is inactive, is the green icon that points to the tree. I don't think the icon ever is green on the teaser screen.
