  • Tree showing people I don't want to show

I think that the gedcom I uploaded many moons ago did not include living people. Even if it did, I'm sure that FT-DNA told me living people wouldn't be shown when someone accessed my family tree on this website.

When I look at the "New Family Tree", I see MANY people who should not be showing. This is disturbing.

Can the entire FT-DNA community see everyone in my tree or is it just because it's my tree that I'm seeing everyone?

You'll always see everyone in your own tree.

Check your settings to make sure others can't see the living people.

At the bottom right corner of the Family Tree page, click the gear icon, then select Privacy Settings.

Thanks. I'll give that a try.

I'm still uneasy about it, but I found the settings and they were as you stated.

        Thanks again.

I'll bet they won't show if you don't include them. The only way to insure people you don't want to show don't show is to exclude them yourself.

            Jim,
You make an excellent point. Thanks.

              Hi,

If you want to keep the space for a person, but don't want the chance of real info showing, you might try simply editing out everything on them except for an initial and surname. But if you do that, check the story and note box to be sure that the information didn't land somehow over in one of those boxes.

I edited my dad down to just his initial and last name, took out his birthdate and location, only to find that the same information was being shown under "Story". I'd never written a story about my dad, so deleted it too. I went through and did this for everyone I wanted private, since I've never intended to have an extended family tree here at FTDNA, I didn't have many to do. But I checked the "Story" situation out on the other test I'm in charge of as well.
