Family Tree DNA, PLEASE give us the ability to search by location!!!

Also, a horizontally oriented pedigree would be great!

    • I got a whole stack of these emails today:

"A McKane added you to their family tree on FamilyTreeDNA.com! Click here to see A McKane's tree now.

To modify your email settings or unsubscribe, click here.

      Family Tree DNA
1445 North Loop West, 820, Houston, TX, 77008"

I manage over 50 kits. This doesn't say who this "you" is; could be any of them. I "click here" to see McKane's tree & just go to my GAP page. Doesn't tell me anything, nor who this McKane allegedly is.

      • Change notification?

I see you are making changes to the familytree tool. Is there some way that when you do a release we can get on an email list so we know to check it out again?

        Thanks,

        Dave

        • I update my tree on another site , more due to letters in surnames due to hand written scripts in BDMs.

Can slight changes of surnames or full addition of branch of a new surname be added?

          • The Tree Tool could still be good with some work but it needs a lot of work.

1,) All the individuals in the tree lacking dates being automatically marked as private is unacceptable. The farther back in one's tree the more likely researchers will have only names and no dates. These farther ancestors are also many times where the actual DNA match resides, to mark these as private when the uploader didn't intend them to be is a disservice to everyone.

2.) It is just as difficult to see a person't tree in it's entirety as before, the only difference is the tree displays from the bottom up now. As mentioned we need a compact pedigree view, preferably going left to right. The more generations you can fit on one page where it's still easily readable before you have to scroll the better.

3.) The DNA links are useless. It is only finding possible links between the name of my matches and comparing to the names in my tree. If I already have my matches name in my tree most likely I tested them, so why is this useful? You need to compare my ancestors in my tree to the ancestors in my matches trees to see if there are any possible matches. This would be more informative than the current setup. We're trying to find connections to people we don't know not connections to people we already know.

            • Awkward with new matches

FYI, I got a new match this morning with a family tree. The new display was extremely awkward to navigate. In order to check for common surnames I had to change to ancestry view, zoom out and then look individually at each little box, where the surnames were not in bold. I sometimes had to zoom in again to read them. I didn't bother to click on them to check locations, since that would have taken a very long time.

I hope you will consider changing the default display very soon to make the trees easier to navigate.

              • GEDCOMs have been replaced by the Family Tree - NO

“GEDCOMs have been replaced by the Family Tree”
Since my GEDCOM was uploaded a few years ago there have been numerous corrections to my Master Tree on Roots Magic. It appears, from the write-up, that GEDCOMs can still be uploaded; but that only seems to work if you don’t already have one.
Is there an option to delete the entire tree?
Or must I go through line by line and delete every item; before reloading?
Or if I delete a box will the tree above that point also be deleted or can I delete myself and collapse the tree?

It would seem to make sense to have the ability to delete the entire tree, or a section, available at some level in the tool kit. Or the ability to load a GEDCOM to replace the tree.

Go into your Family Tree and then click the gear icon in the bottom right corner of the page for these options

                  • I tried that.
I have two items under the gear:
                    Settings and Logout.

There's a different gear icon for the Family Tree:

                      - Go to your myFTDNA Homepage
                      - Click the Family Tree icon in the middle of the page to view your tree.
                      - Click the gear icon in the BOTTOM right corner.

                      • I find I am now using the new tree after all.

Most of my original problems were down to the fact I had stupidly not noticed that you could change to ancestry view down in the bottom left corner. Ancestry view makes it easier for me to navigate the trees than in family view and it also shows more generations going back in time without having to expand lines as much as you do in family view.

Using ancestry view I find I can live with this change and it is good news that people who don't have Gedcom software can build a basic tree here now. I just hope some of them do.

                        Earl.

#2 .....the top priority and #3 plenty of common sense in there.

                          • I got a new match today. She has a very large tree. I would like for someone who designed this new tree to go through her tree for me and click on every match and tell me the locations where every one of her ancestors lived and when they lived in that place AND TIME THEMSELVES!!! Considering that at least half of her ancestors are private, it should only take them an hour or so.

She has no surnames listed. I assume that surname lists are no longer generated when people upload gedcoms???

I am furious about this new tree!!!

                            • Feature request

When viewing the tree of members on the "family finder matches" list, or on the "pending relationships" list, the match widgets/lists that is a part of the familytree presentation (on the right/left), does not appear. It would greatly facilitate manual match checking if these widgets were available wherever the tree presentation was displayed.

That way when I am looking for surnames that appear in someone else's tree that are the same as one of my surnames, your software already would tell me if there were a common surname, thereby facilitating more detailed investigation.

                              Hope this makes sense.

                              Thanks,

                              Dave

                              • I hate to be a complainer...but you say to keep the suggestions coming!

                                1. The navigation around the trees works well on my tablet, but it is difficult on my laptop with the mouse...and that's where I do most of my work. It overshoots/undershoots and sometimes ends up in a place I hadn't sent it.

                                2. I HUGELY agree with the suggestion to make the whole name (including middle) dates and LOCATIONS available at a glance. At least on the old tree you could 'mouse over' and it would show. I'd rather see that info than little heads of men and women.
