  • myFTDNA: New Navigation Bar

    Hi all,

Next time you log in to your myFTDNA accounts, you'll notice a new navigation bar. You'll now see a white menu bar across the top of the screen in place of the previous blue menu bar. The new menu bar has the same design as the public website now, but of course still has the needed myFTDNA functionality.

At the top left, you'll see 3 menu options:

My DNA: Links to view your Y-DNA, mtDNA, Family Finder and Other Results. The same menu options are available under Y-DNA, mtDNA and Family Finder as they were before.

My Projects: Join projects & Manage your project memberships

Resources: Links to the Learning Center, Forums and Glossary

At the top right, you'll see:

Person icon: If there's a number next to this icon, this indicates how many pending Known Relationship requests you have for Family Finder. Click the icon to view your Known Relationships page. (Note: clicking here currently takes you to the Your Known Relationships tab rather than the Pending Relationships tab. IT is working on a fix for this.)

Search icon: Search the project directory for a surname.

Upgrade: Click here to view the various upgrade options available for your kit.

Photo, Name, Kit Number: Click on any of these to quickly access your Personal Profile settings page.

Gear icon: Click here to quickly access your Account Settings page or to log out of your account.

    Thanks for the warning.

Rather bemused by the fact that your IT Dept go out of their way to make it impossible to see what is clickable.

On the plus side, at least this time they have allowed for the size of human fingers when using the new menu on a tablet. A big improvement on the clickable bits of the match lists where you have to expand the screen to click the silly little triangles then swipe it in again to read the content.

Issue with the new navigation bar

I noticed with the new navigation bar that there isn't a way to get to your Big-Y results and/or matches or am I missing something.

Hmm, it's under Other Results as before, but looks like it's missing from the drop-down menu -- I'll report that. For now, click on Other Results, which will take you to the Other Results "landing" page, and you should see a Big Y link there.

Please Fix the Things that are Broken

I wish FTDNA would stop making what I see as changes for "changes sake" and fix the things that are broken or that we have been promised for years: GEDCOMs, Ysearch, display of all mutli peak markers to name a few.

We keep being told they'll be done when IT has the time or when they work to the top of the list. Adding "looks better?" above "broke" doesn't get "broke" fixed.

Its fine the way it is now but I must say I also quite liked the 'tool bar' version, it was simple and functional and apparent at a simple glance where to go.

My little pet hate on the home page is 'you have no new messsages' that has had a typo for well over a year now and has never been fixed - three 's'es! Now I've pointed it out it'll maybe start annoying everyone who reads this too! Apologies if it does...

When I go in as a GAP admin I can no longer go to the GAP link that used to be there. Also, I can't find my way to the facebook page which used to be on each page. Am I missing it?

Maybe its a generational thing, but I agree with Jim and RiverGirl. As the old adage goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," something that FTDNA never has been able to grasp.

And when they do make thier cosmetic changes they usually do break it which then takes additional IT resources to fix what they broke which takes away from their resources to fix the things that have been broken FOR YEARS.

I think there are probably times where something that is a cosmetic change for a laptop or desktop user is a more important change for a tablet or cell phone user. I'm a laptop user with a new Windows 8.1 system and I've been having problems with the recent changes, but I've been able to find a work-around each time. And it's not just FTDNA that doesn't like my new system.

I think it could help if FTDNA had a group of beta testers for the changes. There seem to be quite a few of us on this forum with programming backgrounds. A small group representing a variety of computer systems should be able to identify a lot of these issues before the changes are released.

I use Public Computers for internet. Just went in to look at the new results - and discovered from this computer, Firefox no longer works. I get in, can see Matches - BUT - no drop-down menu for choosing whether to look at "All Matches" or ... or "New Since" -- also, can't do entry after "Name", etc. This definitely used to work - and is computer and system I used recently - when I typed "2" in box to start logging on, got choice of all the kits I manage starting with 2, so it "knew" me.

Switched to Internet Explorer on it (had to type in full Kit Numbers, I have been using Firefox up to now) but then I did get ability to look at "All Matches", "New Since", etc. Not happy that you keep making changes that make it harder and harder to find a system that you work on.

                          Firefox Problems with FF

                          Hello Loobster,

I too have those problems not being able to open up All Matches, Names, etc. Very frustrating.

I used Firefox for a longggg time and it had been giving me so many problems with other sites that I finally let go and went to Google Chrome, as much as I hated to. I did get used to G. Chrome and like it now.
