  • The Learning Center

    Hi,

The new Learning Center is fully live.

All points of the FAQ should redirect to some part of The Learning Center. Let the comments, requests, nitpicks, and grammar error reports begin! :-)

      Issues with the Learning Centre

After 9 months, I still have issues with the new Learning Centre, viz.
1)the big boxes around each subject is very inefficient use of space making it difficult to quickly find the subject you are looking for. This is especially true when scrolling via an iPad. The layout needs to be changed. The previous table version, while not as pretty was much easier to navigate.

2)many of the answers are vaque or confusing.i found better answers in the older version, when it was available.

      3) can't input to the comments link associated with each answer. If I could have, I would have made my specific comments there.

        Enhancements

It would be nice if the learning center included some information about why things don't work, such as reasons why family trees loaded from a gedcom file don't show -or disappear after loading. It would be nice if there were a working feedback mechanism ...

If FTDNA is not providing the information, it might be to our advantage to have a wiki the users (may be project administrators only?) could edit...

            Good idea

As long as there is a link to it somewhere so that new users know about it.

              Feedback doesn't work

I just tried to comment on an explanation in the Learning Centre using the Feedback link, but the link doesn't work?

Does FTDNA not want to listen to feedback?

Also, why has there been no response to the issues I raised on January 31,2015?

Many topics in the learning center (a great name for a very poor site) there are many topics that show zero comments. Why? Because I can't find a place to post a comment. That is a good way to be sure comments don't get posted.

I know the release form has already been discussed recently. I searched the learning center for "Release Form". I got several topics. The first one even mentioned the release form, but it didn't provide a link to the form. What did I learn. I learned not to waste my time with this replacement for FAQ. It is worthless.

FTDNA should hang it head in shame. It doesn't matter how good it looks. It you can't find answers it is a total waste. Can anyone at FTDNA fix this so when someone searches for "Release Form" they find a current copy of the release form.

I've only been an admin since 2002 and in my opinion the last two years have been a disaster. Every time we turn around there are so called improvements that just add more problems. It is past time for FTDNA to stop "upgrading " and start fixing problems rather than adding more.

If you really need one, you can use the old PDF or the JPEG I had posted in http://forums.familytreedna.com/showthread.php?t=37122

There is a newer Release Form for this year, and in my opinion it incorporates a significant (non-legal) change. I wanted to discuss it, but it is beyond my comprehension why FTDNA does not update the PDF... I did not have time to grab a good scan, yet. I do not want to discuss things people cannot see...

Or you can use the link I posted 13 Mar 2015 which is for an out dated form on their website which they will accept.

I have been told that a request has been made to get the current form on line, get the link added and maybe fix the search so it will find it.

We'll have to wait and see how important FTDNA thinks this is.

                            Helpful or ?

Today I was trying to find information about the "Received Lab Results" page of the GAP. I wanted to know the meaning of the codes used in the "Lab Procedure" column so I went to the Learning Center" "GAP How To". There are a total of 12 pages of boxes of information. You have to look at each box on each of the 12 pages to learn that the Learning Center does not have any information about these codes.

If you remember the old FAQ you know that it started with a listing of links to the subjects covered. Click on the link and you were taken to the page with the information you want, if there was a link for it. If there wasn't a link you didn't have to go through ever page to find out your subject wasn't covered. I hope someone can tell me how having to dig through 12 pages to find nothing is better than looking at a one or two page list.

The Learning Center is still in Beta and the pages I'm looking at are dated October 25th, 2013. Please, Please, Please go back to FAQ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
