Ok...figured it out...it was in his settings...

Please choose your preference for matching purposes:

I want to restrict the display of matches only to my Surname Project
I want my matches to be set against the entire database.

thanks to EVERYONE THAT HELPED!!!!!! That is what makes this board so special!!!

Hi guys and gals! Sorry it took so long for me to get back...I had to work today....

At any rate...thanks for all the reply's. Still no 12, 25 or 37 marker matches in FTDNA. My brother did upload his dna to y-search and there are a few (2)33 out of 37 matches...(I think it was 33) I havent checked since this morning. After reading all the info here, im going to go and look at his results again to make sure im reading everything right.

Hey F.E.C. I concur....you just dont know how much <snicker>

    Barb

I didn't realize I was cutting some folks off from the pleasure, however temporary, of seeing some 12-marker matches.

    I'll turn 'em back on.

I know I enjoyed seeing those.

Now I'm really only interested in 37-marker matches, but I can activate my 12ers and 25ers again.

So Barb's brother may very well have at least 12-marker matches, but Barb can't see them because those people chose to hide their 12-marker matches, which in turn is hiding them from Barb as well. As I said above, I don't like this policy at all.

Barb, I suggest uploading your brother's Y-DNA results to Ysearch.org and see if your brother has any 12-marker matches there. Though keep in mind that any 12-marker matches that do show on Ysearch probably fell apart at 25 and 37 markers, which is why FTDNA says you have no matches at those levels either.
Should I turn my 12-marker matches back on, then?

I turned them and the 25-marker matches off and have retained only 37-marker matches.

I posted this to another thread yesterday and it probably applies here as well:

If the other person tested more than 12 markers and then deselected the checkbox to be notified of 12-marker matches, then even the people he does match at 12 markers won't see the match either. Personally, I don't think this is a good idea and I've been meaning to write to FTDNA about this, because then it means that those who match him have no idea that they match him.

When someone says they have no matches at all or very few matches at 12 markers, I've often wondered if they really DO have matches, but aren't seeing them because those people have already upgraded and chosen not to be notified of 12-marker matches.

    Hi Barb,

    apparently you're weirder than me.

Would you mind give us your 12 marker haplotype?

    has anyone ever seen this?
I don't have any matches either, but my haplogroup is I1b (Dinar), which is almost entirely Slavic.

I am surprised that an R1b1 would have no matches. Have you uploaded the data into Ysearch, and looked for partial matches? For example, in Ysearch, my closest matches are 31/37. My uncle's closest matches are 27/37, but he is in haplogroup G2.

has anyone ever seen this? Im not that well versed in dna stuff...so can anyone give an explanation??? (I have to be missing something here).

    Barb
One of our R1b1 guys only has three 12-marker matches, but that was the fewest I had heard of until now (but I haven't been around this dna testing stuff very long).

I only had eight, which, I am told, is a small number for an R1b1.

Over 70% of the entries in the YSEARCH database are R1bs.

I guess when your brother gets a match, you'll all know it's the real deal.

You must be young to have a living gg-uncle.

Either that or he is Methuselah.

I may soon track down some would-be relatives and try to persuade them to test.

My relatives are probably even tighter than your gg-uncle.
