  • Ancestors fun, but can't take too seriously

It turns out that my (according to paf; I can't count that high) 14th greatgrandfather was a fairly famous French painter in the early Renaissance. This is a guy on the direct male line; he should have the same y chromosome I do. Of course there is plenty of legend and conjecture in the paper trail that connects me to him, but it's probably as close as I will be able to come to the truth in my lifetime. Y-DNA results prove the connections back to the 5th great grandfather, and there is potential we can get back to the 7th when a couple of more cousins test.

Anyway, Jean Fouquet did a self portrait: http://cgfa.sunsite.dk/fouquet/fouquet_bio.htm

I don't look very much like him, but if you look at the number of other ancestors at that point, I am related to 2^16 other people in that generation, or 262144 other people (if I set that up in the calculator correctly). So, if I don't look very much like him, it's not surprising
I actually look more like this-->

No sign of results yet...of course I am on Atlantic time. It is near 12:30 pm here...probably the lab is just opening it's doors at this time.

        Good point.

It's easy to get carried away with these y and mtDNA haplogroups, as if those two lines were all there is to a human being and his or her ancestry.

We're all a mixed bag, and we're all related.

              • Some ppl have their 37 markers back already from batch 148. Maybe the 12 marker test we've been waiting for from batch 147 will get posted tonight. I could use a bit more excitement this evening than watching the dogs sleep on the couch.

                      No results yets?

You are waiting for the new extension to 66 markers, as well as the R1b1 deep clade thingee, right?

Those might take a bit longer.

I'm hoping the last 12 of my 37 markers come in this week, although my impatience has been cured by what I have received thus far.

Seems a lot more fun, and a whole lot less morbid, than painting the dead.

That was like a drive through Nebraska: pretty corny.

                            So, any results yet?

                              • Did you see my last post in that IF YOU ARE ONE, BE ONE thread?

I was checking my numbers against Ken Nordvedt's Varieties of R1b chart (for the first 25 markers, anyway).

So far I match R1b-Frisian and R1b-Norwegian exactly on 20 out of 25 markers. No other modal haplotypes come anywhere near as close.

I have a couple of weird marker values that none of the modals match.

There is one value I have that only R1b-East matches.

                                Strange.

Maybe all that will change when my last 12 markers come in.
