It is my observation that the delays are with the deep clade tests and not with the initial Y and mtDNA testing.

Since this is my first test (Y-DNA 37 marker), I hope that is the case.

It does kind of make me wonder if I should bother with a deep clade test or wait awhile until the bugs are worked out.

Either way involves waiting, I guess.

Yes, Ethnoancestry has indeed done some work on I, particularly on I1c. Unfortunately, their price--including the initial DNA extraction fee--is considerably higher than FTDNA's incremental price for so-called deep-subclade testing.

You wouldn't happen to have a link to some of that work on Y-Hg I, would you?

You need to assess what you're trying to get out of DNA testing. If what you want is to break through brickwalls in your genealogy research, Y-37 may help you. 37 markers is enough to determine probable relationship. It's useful for genealogical time frames...since surnames were generally adopted. 37 markers is a great number in my opinion. You've got adequate resolution. If the need arises in the future, and you need to further distinguish between close family lines, then testing more marker may be called for.

If however, you are interested in your deep ancestory, then SNP (deep clade) testing is the vehicle. SNP testing is of little use in determining family relationships but, if you want to know if you might be descended from a Viking this is the test.

I'm more interested in the former...the genealogy. I'm seeking out distant relatives to have them take STR tests. I recently found a suspected cousin, from a different son of the immigrant ancestor. To get it done, I'm paying for it. I've got a standing offer on my web site to subsidize others. I guess you can say I've made my decision for the time being.

Dmac makes a good point! Personally, I'd like both The deep clade test is just plain fascinating - I really can't imagine anyone being able to resist it. Igmayka is right; ethnoancestry has an impressive array of SNP's if that's what you're really into DNA testing for. There is the practical side though too... being able to verify family connections or to find new ones.

I was initially attracted to DNA testing by the prospect of a breakthrough in extending my paternal line back to the thus far unknown immigrant ancestor.

The more I have learned about it, however, the more I have become interested in deep ancestry, as well.

Suggestion to Max

I sent email to Max Blankfeld suggesting that one of the frustrations people feel is not knowing if their test is proceeding on schedule or not. I suggested that they update a page whenever a step in the process succeeds, or fails and needs to be repeated.
Max said that they are working on a program which will email a customer and update a page whenever there is a problem with the person's test. I think most of us just want to know that they haven't forgotten us.
Max emailed back within a few minutes of my mail; as usual ftdna was polite, helpful, and understanding.

I've had the Y-37 results for a while now and have been hunting for distant cousins who'd submit a few scrappings. Finally found one.

Now, if I were to win the lottery, cousins would be coming out of the woodwork.
