I've got to wonder why my initial 12-marker test, my 37-marker upgrade, my mDNA series and halogroup test were all fine and now the 37- to 67-marker upgrade has failed the A swab and first trial on the B-swab.

Are all 3 panels (38-47, 48-60, and 61-67) failing? (Take a look at your Y-DNA DYS Values tab.) For my cousin and me, only the 48-60 panel is failing. I, at least, am hoping that this is due to a Null at DYS425. FTDNA feels obliged to retry any Null result.

All three "thirds" failed with the A swab and the first "third" failed with the first try of the B swab. My surname project leader has suggested that he have FTDNA send me a swab kit straight away and not wait for the rest to fail so that they will have a new sample as soon as possible when the other two thirds fail....he also suggested that the 37- to 67-marker test may not be as sensitive as the earlier tests and take alot of sample...sounds plausible to me.

Out-of-range values?

I asked FTDNA why my, and my cousin's, 48-60 panel is so delayed. (We have already gotten the 38-47 and 61-67 panels.) I specifically asked whether the reason was a Null value at DYS425. This was the response:

In order to ensure accuracy with this type of unusual result, we have the lab check over the results an extra time to confirm that these values are reported correctly before they are posted. The odd thing is that my cousin and I are in different haplogroups! We are not paternally related, except in the sense that our paternal lines both come from rural southern Poland.

Ha ! Maybe something is going on in southern Poland !---I see mutations---Are there any uranium deposits there ? ------just kidding, lgmayka. That does seem mysterious.

The most obvious explanation occurred to me later: The lab mistakenly switched the results between my cousin and me. An I1b's results look out of range on an R1b, and vice-versa.

In the case of my R1b cousin (YX8BS on Ysearch), the out-of-range value was apparently DYS436=13. Little's list of R1b frequencies does not show this value as ever occurring before in R1b:

In the case of myself, an I1b (HZU4N on Ysearch), the supposedly out-of-range value is unclear. Perhaps it was indeed found incorrect and adjusted.

What happened to your markers DYS487 and DYS537? Are they Null or simply out of the range of Ysearch? If they are merely out of range, ask Leah Wark ([email protected]) to extend the markers' ranges to accept your values.

Seriously, the most common values for those markers in the N Y-DNA Project are just what you have. All the more reason to ask Leah to extend the ranges.
