We are getting historical data around 400 A.D. and earlier for Euro Y-DNA and say 200 B.C. and earlier for African mtDNA and of course the usual generalized data for earlier dates. The problem I am having with paper genealogy is around 1800 and 1600 sometimes skipping generations. Also, my surname is almost a perfect match to my Y-DNA. 1870 is just not good enough, but it is interesting. In military school, I was eleven years old when I was uncovering my family history from pre-1870. I guess some families never talk about mommy and daddy. My maternal grandmother was Irish. And that was the first thing I knew about her.
