Are MTNDA tests useful for finding recent common ancestors?

No. The common ancestor you share with a match may have lived thousands of years ago.

You need the Family Finder test to try to find recent relationships. If you are a male a Y-DNA test may of may not be useful as far as your direct male line goes, but that is only one tiny branch of your tree.
