Total shared DNA: 3rd cousins

According to a few blogs I've read, 3rd cousins should expect to share (on average) between 43-150 cMs of autosomal DNA and a longest block of up to 77 cMs.

My grandmother and her 3rd cousin actually share 221 cMs and a longest block of 87 cMs. Could this suggest a closer relationship than 3rd cousins? Or is it more likely that endogamy is influencing the results? Their ancestry is Irish and colonial Virginian.
