I just received my results and I'm ignorant to what I'm reviewing, so I have a few questions. For starters, I paid for 37 markers but I only had matches for 12. What does that actually mean?

I suggest you join the appropriate haplogroup project, and ask the administrator to run a projectwide comparison against your haplotype. For example, at 37 markers, her/his administrative tool can see to a distance of 7, whereas your Y-DNA Matches page can only see to a distance of 4.
But please understand:
- The administrative tool covers only the project's own members
- Any near-matches beyond a distance of 4 at 37 markers are almost certainly not within a genealogical timeframe (i.e., the common ancestor is more than 500 years old)
