Earliest Known Ancestor - Ancestoral Location

I'm not sure I'm in the best place for a newbie question, but I couldn't find a "getting started" forum.

When I look at the list of my Y-DNA matches, many of the earliest known ancestors include a location. When I am listed as a match in another person's list of matches, they can see my earliest known ancestor, DOB and DOD, but no location appears. I filled out my earliest known ancestor, DOB, DOD and Ancestoral Location (county, state, USA) in the genealogy section of my profile, but the location does not seem to get picked up. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

In your "My Profile" section there is a tab for "Genealogy" under that tab is the ancestor information area for direct patrilineal and direct matrilineal ancestors.

Filling out the "Country of Origin" fills in the column of location in project results pages. To put a marker on the map under your kits name you can use longitude and latitude.

When filling out the name of an ancestor I generally put something like this:

John Doe b. 1732 York, England d. 1804 New Brunswick, Canada - sometimes you have to use abbreviations to make things fit. b1732 York, UK d.1804 NB, CA, etc.

This makes some DOB/DOD, location and name information available to some degree in the match lists of others.

Thanks for your feedback. It never occurred to me to write in the location on the same line as EKA's name and dates. With a few abbreviations, that worked fine. Thanks again.

You should not put United States unless you know that your earliest known ancestor was a Native American Indian. If you don't know what country your earliest ancestor came from, leave it blank or put "Unknown".

Agreed. This can cause confusion.
