Basque/Sephardic/Mennonite connection?

This is my first post to a forum, so forgive me if I make a mistake. My dad's earliest paternal ancestor who came to America was born in Cleebourg, in what is now Alsace, France in 1693. I recently found out his family was Mennonite and had previously lived in various locations in Germany (Baden-Wurttemberg being one of them) due to persecution. Their last name was Schumacher, which became Shoemaker in America and then Shumaker, my maiden name. In my research I found some articles that suggested some of the Mennonites may have been Jewish originally, albeit perhaps distantly.

On Ancestry and FTDNA I show no Jewish percentages. On Gedmatch in the Jtest I get 2.81%. Ancestry has me, though, at 10% Iberian Peninsula with 25% Western Europe with traces of Eastern Europe and Italy/Greece. FTDNA MyOrigins originally showed 28% Western/Central Europe and 7% Eastern Europe. Now, the Western Europe is gone and is replaced by 19% Southern Europe and trace amounts of Eastern Europe.

What I find interesting are the results I get in the oracle for the MDLP World22 admixture calculator which shows Sephardic and Ashkenazi throughout. (Keep in mind that my maternal grandmother was Scandinavian/Finnish.)

# Primary Population (source) Secondary Population (source) Distance
1 93.7% Swedish (derived) + 6.3% Jew_Francestrale (derived) @ 1.96
2 94.1% Swedish (derived) + 5.9% Sephardim (derived) @ 1.97
3 93.4% Swedish (derived) + 6.6% Ashkenazim (derived) @ 1.98
4 94.3% Swedish (derived) + 5.7% Jew_Algeria (derived) @ 1.98
5 93.8% Swedish (derived) + 6.2% Jew_Italia (derived) @ 1.98
6 94.6% Swedish (derived) + 5.4% Jew_Libya (derived) @ 2.01
7 94.1% Swedish (derived) + 5.9% Jew_Morocco (derived) @ 2.01
8 93% Swedish (derived) + 7% Sicilian (derived) @ 2.01
9 94.4% Swedish (derived) + 5.6% Jew_Tunisia (derived) @ 2.02
10 92.3% Swedish (derived) + 7.7% Italian-Center (derived) @ 2.05
11 92.7% Swedish (derived) + 7.3% Italian-South (derived) @ 2.05
12 94.8% Swedish (derived) + 5.2% Cypriot (derived) @ 2.09
13 92% Swedish (derived) + 8% Greek_Center (derived) @ 2.11
14 90.7% Swedish (derived) + 9.3% Ashkenazim_V (derived) @ 2.11
15 92.3% Swedish (derived) + 7.7% Jew_Romania (derived) @ 2.11
16 92.4% Swedish (derived) + 7.6% Greek_East (derived) @ 2.11
17 93.7% Swedish (derived) + 6.3% Greek_Cretan (derived) @ 2.12
18 94.8% Swedish (derived) + 5.2% Jew_Syria (derived) @ 2.13
19 91.3% Swedish (derived) + 8.7% Greek_South (derived) @ 2.14
20 90.4% Swedish (derived) + 9.6% Italian-North (derived) @ 2.16

I also get Sephardic and Ashkenazi in the puntDNAL K10, and Gedrosia Ancient Eurasia K6, also K12, and K3.

Basque, both French and Spanish, shows up very prominently in just about all the calculators. Here's an example with MDLP World22.

Using 3 populations approximation:
1 50% German-North_derived +25% Inkeri_derived +25% Spaniard_derived @ 2.206465

Using 4 populations approximation:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++
1 Basque_derived + CEU_derived + Inkeri_derived + Ukrainian-Center_derived @ 1.275502

15 Basque_derived + German-North_derived + German_V_derived + Vepsa_derived @ 1.558942
16 Basque_derived + German-South_derived + Inkeri_derived + Russian_V_derived @ 1.565159
17 Basque_derived + British_derived + Finnish_derived + Ukrainian-Center_derived @ 1.604552
18 Basque_derived + Finnish_derived + German-South_derived + Polish_derived @ 1.605568

20 Basque_derived + German_V_derived + Karelian_derived + Slovakian_derived @ 1.622024

And here's with MDLP K16 Modern:

# Primary Population (source) Secondary Population (source) Distance
1 67.5% Pole (Poland) + 32.5% Basque (France) @ 1.69
2 68.3% Belarusian (Belarus) + 31.7% Basque (France) @ 1.7
3 62% Belarusian (Belarus) + 38% Spanish (Pais_Vasco) @ 1.84
4 61.2% Pole (Poland) + 38.8% Spanish (Pais_Vasco) @ 1.91
5 87.9% Norwegian (Norwegia) + 12.1% Sardinian (Sardinia) @ 1.97
6 61.4% Belarusian (Belarus) + 38.6% French (SouthFrance) @ 2.02
7 78.3% Swede (Sweden) + 21.7% Spanish (Pais_Vasco) @ 2.02

12 60.6% Pole (Poland) + 39.4% French (SouthFrance) @ 2.23
13 55.7% Russians-West (WestRussian) + 44.3% French (SouthFrance) @ 2.24
14 69% Russian (CentralRussia) + 31% Basque (France) @ 2.27
15 63.1% Russians-West (WestRussian) + 36.9% Basque (France) @ 2.32
16 68.7% Ukrainians_east (EastUkraine) + 31.3% Basque (France) @ 2.33
17 60% Russian (Tver) + 40% Spanish (Pais_Vasco) @ 2.34
18 93.7% English (Kent) + 6.3% Saami_WGA (Lapland) @ 2.48
19 89.1% English (Kent) + 10.9% Vepsa (Russia) @ 2.49
20 88.2% English (Kent) + 11.8% Karelian (Karelia) @ 2.5

So, what to make of all this? I'm pretty certain that the Basque/Southern Europe comes from my father's side. The Mennonites in Germany often lived in the same areas as the Jews (like Baden-Wurttemberg) because they were similarly persecuted. Could there have been a distant Sephardic or, perhaps less likely, Ashkenazi connection there? I have no known recent ancestors from Southern Europe.

My Gedmatch kit number is A250354 if anyone wants to check it out. I'd appreciate any comments. Thanks!

Basques are not Sephardic. They do not plot with each other on PCA graphs, admixture calculators, or with other valid DNA tools.

The calculators that you are using aren't very good.

Here are your Eurogenes K13 Oracle-4 results which uses a more accurate calculator:

Yes, for Jewish ancestry I would use Eurogenes or DNA Tribes.

Thank you both for your replies. I'm still kind of puzzled by the 10% Iberian on Ancestry and 19% Southern Europe on FTDNA. I guess it's a mystery.

Your initial post mentions that your father's paternal side is German Mennonite. But, you also wrote that "I'm pretty certain that the Basque/Southern Europe comes from my father's side." The Basque live in northern Spain, which is in southern Europe.

Why is it a mystery that you get significant percentages of Iberian at Ancestry and Southern Europe at FTDNA? The percentages seem to be an accurate reading of your ancestry.

She also stated "I have no known recent ancestors from Southern Europe." AncestryDNA estimates too much Iberian in too many people with no ancestry from Iberia and FTDNA estimates too much Southern Europe in too many people with no ancestry from southern Europe. If she really had some Basque or other southern European ancestry then it would also show with the Eurogenes calculators with Oracle-4. This is why AncestryDNA and FTDNA myOrigins aren't very good either.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear on that. What I should have said was, based on what I know about my mother's side, if there is an Iberian or Southern Europe component it most likely comes from my father. However, I haven't found the ancestor who is responsible for that. As I mentioned, his paternal line comes from Germany (I have that researched back to the early 1500's) and other areas in his lineage are Ireland, the Netherlands, and most likely England. I would really like to know from whom I get these "significant percentages," as you said, from Ancestry and FTDNA. That's why I was looking into a possible Sephardic connection to the ancestors in Germany. It did not necessarily have to also be Basque, but I included it in my question because it seemed to come up a lot at Gedmatch.

Would the 10% Iberian and 19% Southern Europe indicate a recent ancestor from those areas? That's what I would be interested in finding out. Whether that reflects distant ancestry or someone more recent. My maternal great-grandfather, for instance, was Finnish and I get 21% Finland/Western Russia on Ancestry and 14% Finnish on FTDNA. So would that imply that my Iberian and Southern Europe percentages are similarly recent?

Each calculator uses different reference populations and a different methodology. AncestryDNA has released a study where they show what the 1000 Genomes populations get with their calculator. The Basque get 100% Iberian which would make you think that you have a Basque ancestor since you get 10% Iberian on Ancestry. However, since the AncestryDNA calculator provides wacky results for a lot of people that 10% Iberian can't be taken literally. If you had taken the 23andme test and received 10% Iberian then I would trust it but AncestryDNA can't be trusted. Just like the Eurogenes K13 and K15 calculators don't show Iberian ancestry the 23andme test wouldn't either. Those calculators are much better for people that really are from Spain, Portugal, and Basque country or Latin America. For a calculator to be trusted it should have a high reproducibility rate and Eurogenes and 23andme have that. We know that based on the amount of people without Iberian ancestry that don't get Iberian DNA and the amount that do compared to AncestryDNA.

Additionally, if you really did have 10% Iberian you would have several matches at Gedmatch that have 4 grandparents from Iberia or Latin America. It doesn't look like you have any.

I would just ignore the results from AncestryDNA and FTDNA since too many people complain about a false result of Iberian at AncestryDNA and southern European with FTDNA, the lack of matches with Iberian ancestry, Eurogenes doesn't show you to have Iberian ancestry, and you don't have a known Iberian ancestor. Stick with the calculators with a higher reproducibility rate.

To my knowledge, there is no actual evidence for this. I have not been finding Mennonite matches to Ashkenazic or Sephardic DNA segments, despite what Tim Janzen alleged about his genetic ancestry. There are some Christian matches from other German communities who do sometimes discover actual Jewish DNA they didn't know about before testing.

There is your answer.

No, that "ASHKENAZI" genetic base/affinity element does not equate Ashkenazic Jewish ancestry.

"AJ" (the actual Ashkenazic Jewish ethnic indicator in Jtest) does not appear on any line of guesses in your Jtest oracle's mixed mode.

Thank you, Armando and Khazaria. So, I guess we're done here.
