Does FTDNA run Y chromosome product specials ever? Maybe for something like father's day?

Yes. Yes.

FTDNA sale before Christmas usually includes some discounts for their Y DNA tests, too. There are also other times of the year when various discounts for Y DNA tests might be offered.

However, the special pricing could be for:

• upgrades only;
• Big Y only;
• Y DNA STR test only (Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, Y-DNA111);
• SNP packs only;
• some combination of the above.

For the obvious business reasons, FTDNA does not share with their customers any advance knowledge about nature or timing of their special pricing offers.

I would use one of their current specials for Family Finder + Y-DNA37 or Family Finder + Y-DNA67. Or if you hope for larger discounts of Y DNA tests to be available sometime in the future, just use FTDNA current special pricing for Family Finder and wait...

All men in my family had the Family Finder test, so their relationships could be confirmed. Y DNA tests alone (as offered by FTDNA) would not offer such information.

The usual times when Y-DNA tests (usually Y37 through Y111 and Big Y) are on sale are on the following sales.

• DNA Day Sale (the days leading up to April 25)
• Father's Day Sale (a week or more leading up to the 3rd Sunday of June)
• Holiday Sale (starts around mid November, ends at Dec 31)

Those tend to always have a sale for Y-DNA tests, so far. As noted sometimes the sale will be for upgrades only or for new tests only.
