I am trying to help my (informally adopted) sister find information about her family. She's developmentally disabled so she can't do this herself, but she's very eager to learn anything she can about her origins. She was brought to the US from a Saigon orphanage in the 1980's and placed with an American foster family. The assumption is that her father was an American GI, but there's no information available about her background whatsoever. I'd like to try doing some genetic research but have no idea where to start. Can anybody point me in the right direction? And also, do you know of anybody who has tried --and gotten somewhere--with a quest like this? (i.e. find something out about an Amerasian orphan with no documented history).

Family Finder Test is a good starting point
Roberta Estes also has a number of concepts articles on her blog in addition that will help you come up to speed on testing, try searching with keywords like concepts and autosomal.
Family Finder, or autosomal testing, will show you matches from parents and siblings through cousins. This is probably a good first step to looking for her father.
You are should try following the process adoptees use, they have developed techniques that help with the total absence of family information.
www.DNAAdoption.com is a good place to start.
Good luck!
