Naming their children

Did you know the British had 'naming patterns' to honor their elders ?
In 1700-1875 the first son was named after the father's father. Second son names after the mother's father. 3rd son after the father. 4th son after the father's eldest brother. First daughter after the mother's mother. 2nd daughter after the father's mother. 3rd daughter after the mother. 4th daughter after the mother's eldest sister. If this pattern would result in a duplication of names (both grandfathers had the same name) then they would skip to the next one on the list. This could be very helpful but many genealogists warn against giving it too much credence. (genealogy.com)
