Maternal Lineages (mtDNA)
Direct maternal lineages can be traced with a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) test. Children, both male and female, inherit their mtDNA from their mothers. MtDNA testing can be used as evidence in genealogy and for personal ethnic ancestry. It is commonly used in studies to show migrations of population groups across time and geography.

Paternal Lineages (Y-DNA)
Direct paternal lineages are traced with Y-DNA tests from the male Y-Chromosome. Y-DNA testing lends itself to recent surname studies, personal ethnic ancestry testing, and the study of historic connections between populations and geography.
